  • Perfect Christmas involves family, lasting memories

Tonya Fennell Christmas perfection has always eluded me. I’m the wife who burns the rolls or forgets to buy a needed ingredient for the casserole. I’m the friend who waits until the last minute to mail presents, so of course they’re always late. I’m the mother who buys the perfect video game, but my kids can’t play it Christmas morning because it’s for a different system. And I always forget the batteries. But, time has taught me that perfection is boring and Christmas should be about the memories. My husband and I tried to i...

  • Mommy police create guilt over inability to breast feed

Anita Doberman I remember, after having my first child and dropping out of the work force, really the adult world, feeling isolated. Of course, the fact that my military husband was often gone didn’t help, but many mothers I have spoken to over the years have shared the same sense of isolation, no matter what their husbands’ professions. I knew I was at an all-time low when my mother-in-law tried to get the phone number of a woman with a baby — a complete stranger who happened to walk by while we were at the grocery store... Full story

  • Many airmen move during holidays

    Sharna Johnson

Instead of tinsel and lights, their homes are filled with brown cardboard boxes. And rather than neatly folded, brightly colored wrapping paper, the rustle of packing paper being swathed around fragile items echoes through empty rooms. Military families are no strangers to moving, but many at Cannon Air Force Base this year are dealing with the added challenge of relocating during the holidays. Between 40 and 50 Cannon personnel are moving over the holidays due to... Full story

Their act of charity earned them recognition Thursday from Clovis City Commission as the first recipients of the Good Samerican Award. • Take chances to make 2008 great

    Helena Rodriguez

If 2007 wasn’t exactly heaven, then 2008 should be great. Like that rhyme? How about these? With ’08 comes the great debate. Lose weight in ’08. Mate in ’08. End hate in ’08. Whatever fate awaits you in ’08, have a happy new year. May your resolutions continue long past the turning of the calendar page, that is, if you make resolutions. The only resolution I resolve to make this year is to be open to change and live my life one day at a time. I expect ’08 to be a year of many transitions. My 17-year-old daughter Laur... Full story

  • Monumental decision places coal off limits

Then-president Bill Clinton’s surprise creation of the 2-million-acre Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument in September 1996 may seem like ancient history to many Americans, if they recall it all. But the decision, made in secret, implemented by executive order and timed by Clinton to solidify the support of environmental groups in the days leading up to Election Day, now looms ominously in Utah’s energy future. Controversy still lingers over Clinton’s actions in the southern part of the Beehive State. It was so unpop...

  • New Mexicans rarity in parts of U.S.

I took notes as The Lady of the House and I zipped across the southeastern United States visiting family last month: 4,825 miles of interstate, two-lane back roads, city streets and such. With all those miles, a working stiff like me from Clovis, New Mexico, saw and experienced some things that were, well, noteworthy. For instance, we can tour Clovis’ Norman Petty Studios and all the studio folks might ask for is a donation. To tour Memphis’ Sun Studios where Elvis recorded is 10 bucks a head. When you’re talking tour buslo... Full story

Traveling to: Cochiti Park, to do volunteer work for the Corps of Engineers Thoughts on Clovis: “Just came into Clovis and noticed on our GPS that the elevation was almost as high as North Carolina, but the land seems flatter. We’ve enjoyed the ride; it’s been nice. The roads are great, and we liked watching the trains bring in all of the products from China.” Passing through is compiled by CNJ administrative assistant Dianna...

  • Official: No county funds missing

    CNJ Staff

County Attorney Stephen Doerr said Thursday the county is not missing money from county fair revenues. However, he said the State Police are investigating an accounting discrepancy of between $2,000 and $7,200. “Right now our position is that there is no money missing,” he said. “But it looks like our book entries don’t jive. And so we want that followed, and if the book entries jive and we just have a poor way of reporting it, then we need to change that.” State Police Sgt. E.J. Fouratt is reviewing the accounting of the co...

  • Business Year in Review: Industries flocked to Clovis in 2007

    CNJ Staff

To economic developers 2007 brought the promise of new industries coming to Clovis. To farmers, the year brought in a combination of a great crop and great prices. On the other hand, the same year saw a flat housing market. But things are looking up for next year, according to Realtor Gayla Brumfield. The interest of companies looking to locate in Clovis has increased this year, according to Gene Hendrick, a business recruiter for Clovis Industrial Development Corp. The majority of industries that have expressed interest in m...

  • Holiday memories offer moment of peace

    Judy Brandon

As I write this column the day before Christmas, I am thinking about the changes in our world since our children were small. Many things have changed. Christmas presents for kids have changed. Annie and Buffy both went through a time when they wanted Cabbage Patch Kids. I remember frantic days right before Christmas when I could only locate one doll. I remember I managed to find one at the last minute and Christmas that year turned out fine. Those dolls were the thing that... Full story

  • Christians can celebrate with deep and genuine joy

I hope you’re having a great Christmas. If our hearts are really prepared for it, it can be such a wonderful time. I know. A lot about the way our society “celebrates” Christmas is nothing to celebrate. In fact, as Andrew Greeley writes, some aspects of the sometimes-not-so-holy “holy-day” might make us tempted to run from the whole thing: “It might be easy to run away to a monastery, away from the commercialization, the hectic hustle, the demanding family responsibilities of Christmastime. Then we would have a holy Christ...

  • Recycling gives Christmas trees new life

    CNJ staff

Ornament and tinsel-free Christmas trees left by Dumpsters will be picked up by Clovis’ team of refuse collectors. Trees also can be taken to the landfill on East Brady Street. Either way, the trees will be ground up to make free mulch at the landfill. “People will use the mulch and it’s better to grind them up then to take up room in the landfill,” said Ramona Frogge, Public Works administrator. The city has been recycling Christmas trees for five or six years, according to Frogge. City residents can call Public Works a...
