the Staff of the News|Updated Dec 9, 2017

FARWELL — After a couple of blowout victories in the Farwell Tournament, Texico’s boys basketball team was able to play a steady game against a tough Fort Sumner team and held on to win a much more competitive game, 53-47, to win the Farwell Tournament on Saturday night. It was, in fact, Texico’s most competitive game, its biggest challenge since Tuesday night’s home win over Gateway Christian. The Wolverines improved to 7-0 and dealt Fort Sumner its first loss (5-1) by gaining some double-digit separation in the fourth...

  • Delk doesn't need a hand

    Eric Murray, Staff Writer|Updated Dec 9, 2017

ELIDA - Unlike other basketball players, Elida junior forward Teigan Delk grabs rebounds with one hand, instead of two, and for good reason - he can't. Delk was born with half of his right arm missing, including the forearm and hand. Despite this, Delk has played basketball all of his life, and better yet, always has a smile on his face. For Delk, being born with two hands is no big deal in terms of playing the game, and in fact, he even believes he may be better for it. "All...

  • Treys help Rams bury Santa Rosa

    Eric Murray, Staff Writer|Updated Dec 9, 2017

PORTALES - The Rams used 12 3-pointers and a 17-2 second quarter run to breeze past Santa Rosa, 85-48, in Saturday's boys basketball showdown. Portales made 50% of its 3-point opportunities, while limiting the Lions' impact down low. "What we're doing in practice is really carrying over to our games now. I think the kids are seeing that and they're realizing how important practice is," Rams head coach Rickie McBroom said. "I'll be honest, we shoot tons of shots in practice -...

  • Lady Rams win Santa Fe Tournament

the Staff of the News|Updated Dec 9, 2017

SANTA FE — The Portales girls won Saturday’s Capital City Tournament basketball championship game over Santa Fe Indian School, 47-40. The Rams scored 18 first quarter points and held the Braves to just 10 total field goals on the day. “We jumped out to a really big lead,” Rams coach Wade Fraze said. “But it was a challenge, because every (Braves player) can shoot, handle the ball and pass — they’re a dangerous team. They played a really tough zone and got their hands on a lot of things. We just kind of had to grind it out...

  • In tribute: 'Weather man' gone after 56 years on the job

    David Grieder, Staff writer|Updated Dec 9, 2017

MELROSE - For more than 55 years, Grady Bright was the man to ask about the weather in Melrose. Bright, who died last Sunday, shouldered many responsibilities in his 87 years - a devoted family and church leader, a grain elevator manager for decades, and in numerous ways a servant to his community of Melrose. But perhaps no single role was as unique as his position as a National Weather Service observer from 1957 to 2013, in the same village in which he raised his family,...

As an advocate of playing dress up as often as possible, it's never too late to come up with a fantastic look that's festive and speaks to your personality at your holiday party. You never want to look the same as the year before. Instead, you want to be the person that everyone looks forward to seeing. You want to keep people guessing what look you will come up with every time they expect to see you. When putting...

  • Mom always had a remedy for what ailed you

    Karl Terry, Columnist|Updated Dec 9, 2017

I’ve got to admit I’ve never been too regular about getting my flu shot every year. I’m not too sure why I picked a year to get it when some say the vaccine is only 10 percent effective. I’m not sure if I have the real flu or not. I’ve always been suspicious of folks who come down with the flu midweek and are just fine by the weekend. That’s not to say that I don’t believe they are sick, I just think a lot of illnesses get tabbed as flu when they probably are just a cold....

  • My secret identity is email hockey dad

    Kevin Wilson, Managing editor|Updated Dec 9, 2017

I’ve been living a secret identity. It’s unfortunately boring and annoying. I neither fight crimes in secret nor execute crimes in secret. I’m a hockey dad. It started a few weeks ago when I got an email from some graphic designer named Bob in Massachusetts. They were jersey number and letters and helmet decals. “What do you think of these?” I wrote an encouraging reply. “Hey Bob, these are great in my mind. But I have to believe you’re trying to reach another Kevin Wilson. I live in New Mexico, I have never set foot in M...

  • Social media decorum appreciated

    Wendel Sloan, Columnist|Updated Dec 9, 2017

Rarely do I post political opinions on my Facebook page. Once in a blue moon I offer my two-cents of data-driven defense for a poor soul being egregiously attacked by sans-facts gang-pouncers on someone else’s page. Generally, my political postings are restricted to the “Democratic Oasis” Facebook page I established in 2015. Those discussions tend to be fairly robust critiques of decisions hurting the powerless rather than unabashed personal bashing of those hurting them....

  • Permanent funds do not exist for lawmaker raids

    Albuquerque Journal|Updated Dec 9, 2017

Once again, a lawmaker is eyeing one of the state’s permanent funds to boost spending on education, apparently either forgetting or ignoring the reason these funds have “permanent” in their names. This time, Sen. John Sapien, D-Corrales, is going after the nearly $5 billion Severance Tax Permanent Fund, which receives revenue from oil and gas production. Sapien wants to increase the annual amount taken out of the fund from the current 4.7 percent to 5.5 percent, and use the resulting $35 million to expand early child...

  • Weird Christmas - on a budget

    Jamie Cushman, Staff writer|Updated Dec 9, 2017

Editor's note: Staff writer Jamie Cushman went shopping last week with instructions to find 10 uniquely weird Christmas presents for under $10. Here's what he came up with: To start this quest for weird gifts I took the arduous 15-second drive from our newsroom in Clovis to The Frog and Flea. Though the store had a number of unique items that fit the bill, my favorite was the tumbleweed ornament available for $6. What better (or weirder) way is there to celebrate the holidays in New Mexico than hanging everyone’s favorite p...
