  • Rams top Cardinals for fifth title

The Staff of The News|Updated Dec 5, 2016

PORTALES — The Portales Rams saved their best for last. The host Rams wrestled control from the top-seeded and previously undefeated Robertson Cardinals, and posted 29 unanswered points to secure a 43-14 win and the Class 4A state championship Saturday at Greyhound Stadium. Junior Ramirez rushed for four touchdowns as the second-seeded Rams (12-1) won their fifth title in school history and first since winning the 3A crown in 2008. The win exorcised a few demons for the R...

  • Look for good in the world

    Patti Dobson|Updated Dec 5, 2016

I believe in the goodness of people. Even now when the world seems flipped on its axis, the goodness of people shines through the darkness. The view from the cheap seats is pretty good. Case in point: A young woman who lost both of her parents in a relatively short amount of time decided to celebrate the blessings in her life by helping others. She sent out an SOS asking for people that she could help at Thanksgiving. The response was a tad bit overwhelming; yet with help...

  • Urban areas full of brutal endings

    Wendel Sloan|Updated Dec 5, 2016

Penning this while perusing the “Dallas Morning News” in Dallas, eastern New Mexico feels far away and peaceful. Of course, violence is probably similar percentage wise, but urban areas seem filled with brutal endings. A Fort Worth motorcyclist died after crashing into a rock-filled truck. A 46-year-old man was slain in a North Dallas hotel. Two female suspects are being sought. A 20-year-old woman died after a man stole a backhoe, drove it the wrong way on a Dallas fre...

  • I couldn't pass as a refrigerator thief

    Kevin Wilson|Updated Dec 5, 2016

I’m an unabashed supporter of Gatorade, even though I rarely have any reason to drink it. It brings back memories for me of hours playing basketball, and popping over to one of our town’s two gas stations for a little bit of hydration and a little bit of flavor. I loved Citrus Cooler, but I usually had to settle for Lemon-Lime. I still remember the failed Iced Tea flavor. No matter the flavor, the best part stayed with you even after you’d drank the last drop. The bottle was, and is, a work of art, even more so than the b...

  • University's false alarms need to stop

The Eastern New Mexico News|Updated Dec 5, 2016

PORTALES — Oops. Somebody accidentally pushed a button Wednesday morning and cops swarmed around the Student Academic Services building on the campus of Eastern New Mexico University. At the same time, students, faculty and staff were instructed to "Shelter in place," and "Mute cell devices." Those off campus mostly just prayed or worried about the supposed "Active shooter on campus" endangering their friends and loved ones. Now we know it was all a mistake. There was no active shooter or any kind of emergency at the P...

  • Ariel's sister: 'I guess we will never have peace'

    David Stevens|Updated Dec 5, 2016

CLOVIS — Maybe the worst part is the chatter, the "jokes," the curt words overheard that were probably not intended to hurt anybody ... but they cut deep. "My oldest son is 13," Leanna Montano said. "His friends say things like, 'That girl who haunts the park is going to get you,' not knowing that is my son's aunt. "You constantly hear people talking about it. Things like that just make you ... I don't know ... sad." It's been more than two years since Ariel Ulibarri, M...

  • Counting blessings therapeutic

    Alisa Boswell|Updated Dec 5, 2016

I've been a little bit of a roller coaster lately. I would perk up for brief periods of time, then the exhaustion and the feeling of "I don't want to be here" would set in again. I spent Monday-Wednesday of last week and the entire week before in a funk. I didn't want to be at work; I didn't want to socialize. I didn't want to do much of anything. I immediately perked up on Thanksgiving Day when I woke up and knew my parents and other family would be getting into town in a few short hours. I had a wonderful weekend filled...

    Kurt Munz-Raper|Updated Dec 5, 2016

PORTALES — A Portales attorney filed a petition Friday in the Roosevelt County Court Clerk’s office to remove Roosevelt County Sheriff Malin Parker from office via jury trial. The petition from Eric Dixon states five arrest affidavits were signed by Parker that included the following statement: “This informant has in the past proved to give reliable credible information that lead to the recovery of thousands of dollars in stolen property and gave information that lead to two felony arrests.” Parker declined to comment. The af...

  • Dogs and I may all need a psychiatrist

    Karl Terry|Updated Dec 5, 2016

I think we may be in need of the services of a doggie psychiatrist. Having lived through the 13-year life of a truly whacked out Dalmatian, I never thought I would feel that way again but our four-legged family members have pushed us to the limit lately. Things have only gotten worse since my last column about our pets. One morning about 1 a.m. the creature that sleeps on my couch at night began to bark incessantly so I got up to check it out. He hadn’t gone outside so I c...

Clovis High School senior Gavin Petner said he was surprised with the turnout of the parade. "As a kid I've always come," said Petner. "I like seeing that everybody is coming to support everything." Petner said a standout in the parade was seeing the high school band perform. Grady resident Martin M...

Today's family in need: A grandmother came to the Salvation Army to volunteer. Around three months ago she was given custody of her two grandchildren, ages 7 and 9. "We recently came in contact with a grandmother who has been living on SSI (supplemental security income) disability," said Salvation Army Corps Officer Lt. Kelly Berggren. "She would rather give than receive and she is not asking for help. We are asking on her behalf." She tried to find part time work but is...

On this date ... 1966: Clovis High School was preparing for its season opener in the 1966-67 basketball season. The team featured "little in the way of height," but "a great deal in the way of speed," the Clovis News-Journal reported. Top players were 6-4 Dan Shelley, a returning starter who was the team's second-leading scorer a year ago, and Roy Davis, a "sparkplug" playmaker, according to the newspaper. Wayne Pollard was described as a "dribbling wizard." 1961: Cannon Air F...
