  • FDA halts Sunland's reopening

    Sunland Inc.'s plans to reopen its processing plant today were thwarted Monday by the Food and Drug Administration. Sunland Vice-President Katalin Coburn said Sunland officials were surprised Monday to learn the FDA was suspending its food processing plant registration, preventing the company from producing or distributing any food.   • Zias add pair in softball for 2014

    The Eastern New Mexico University softball team has added a pair of early signees for the 2014 season in shortstop/third baseman Audrey Velasquez of Las Cruces and pitcher Alyssa Cornejo of Riverside, Calif. Both will come in as freshmen during the 2013-14 school year. Velasquez earned all-district honors last spring at Las Cruces High as a shortstop, leading the Bulldawgs in home runs last spring while not striking out once all season.     ?? Prize drawings and free breakfast were among the ways local retailers plied shoppers on Black Friday. Burns Do It Center staff prepared grilled pancakes in the morning to attract shoppers. Also, store merchandise such as kitchen and Christmas items were marked up to 60 and 70 percent off and a drawing for a $1,000 shopping spree was held.     I've been away on vacation. A nice escape from reality, we've been off doing our favorite thing… seeing new sights. But when we booked the get-away, there were a couple of dates that gave me pause. I do love a traditional Thanksgiving, so it was a very big deal to decide to be away from home on that wonderful day.     ALBUQUERQUE — The New Mexico peanut butter company that was shuttered after a salmonella outbreak will reopen its peanut processing facility on Tuesday and hopes to be making peanut butter again by the end of the year, officials said.
