  • Who else? Melrose takes on Gateway for 8-man title

    Dave Wagner|Updated Nov 25, 2016

Since squaring off in the season opener on a neutral field, Melrose and Gateway Christian have stayed on course for a return match in the 8-man state finals. That will happen on Saturday, when the top-ranked Warriors (11-0) host the two-time defending 8-man champion and second-ranked Buffaloes (10-1) in a 1 p.m. kickoff in Roswell. It’s also a rematch of last year’s title tilt, when the Buffs outlasted Gateway 30-28 at Melrose. Gateway won the late August matchup at Cloudcroft 30-20. Since then, the Warriors have had thr...

A video of the college’s attempt was posted last Friday to the school’s YouTube channel and Facebook page. Unlike the “Ice Bucket Challenge” that raised awareness for ALS two years ago, there’s no rhyme or reason for the Mannequin Challen...

  • Empty stocking fund - Nov. 25

    Updated Nov 25, 2016

Today's family in need: It seems there is an epidemic this year of grandparents raising grandkids. This single grandmother is raising grandchildren ages 5 to 14 from three different families. She has a total of nine children living with her. "We have tried to help with the financial and spiritual needs of this extended family, but we can only do so much especially during the Christmas season," said Salvation Army Corps Officer Lt. Kelly Berggren. About the Empty Stocking...

  • She ain't scared of no folks

    Audra Brown|Updated Nov 25, 2016

Stage fright, a phenomenon of cumulative social pressure and the expectations and judgements of a crowd of people, is an interesting concept. It is considered a major barrier to many performing arts where the main venue is a stage in front of a live crowd. I remember the first time I sang on a stage, the first time I broke a stack of bricks for a demonstration, the first time I got up the courage to play a guitar in front of an audience, and while there was a certain...

  • Volunteers bring Lighthouse dinner together

    Kevin Wilson|Updated Nov 25, 2016

CLOVIS — The Lighthouse Mission had two things to be thankful for on Thursday — plenty of food and plenty of help. The turkey and volunteerism were in abundance as the mission marked its 13th year of serving a free holiday meal during the lunch period. Though the meal is advertised from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., the eating starts early and the volunteering even earlier. Dawn Lampley, a volunteer for the mission, was running the kitchen so Executive Director Richard Gomez could handle...

Small Business Saturday deals are coming to Clovis and Portales this weekend to give residents a chance to support local businesses and the community. Shane Grah, owner of Prairie Road's Junqtiques in Clovis, is continuing his tradition of having a large sale at the store. "Nothing crazy, just a big sale," said Grah. "There'll be a whole bunch of furniture and cotton stocks and candelines at 25 percent off." Grah said items from the brand Rustic Enigma will be discounted at 25...

  • Plenty of thankful women in the Bible

    Judy Brandon|Updated Nov 25, 2016

Last week, this column focused on men in the Bible who were thankful. So this week, let us focus on women of the Bible who were thankful. Their stories give us encouragement because we can see God in their lives and recognize him as the author of all blessings. The accounts of their lives are examples to us that God works out the biggest events and the smallest details of our lives. • Eve was no doubt thankful when she had another child after her son Abel had been murdered by...

  • Portales community gathers for Thanksgiving dinner

    Alisa Boswell|Updated Nov 25, 2016

PORTALES — "Seeing the smiles on everyone's faces" was the best thing about the annual Portales community Thanksgiving dinner Thursday at the Portales Memorial Building, according to 11-year-old Irene Cruz and other first-time volunteers. "I like to put smiles on people's faces," said Irene's older brother, Luis, 13. "The camaraderie, people wanting to come out and help on this special day" is what stands out for event coordinator Veda Urioste. "I like to see the younger g...
