  • Donation collection for firework show starting early

Staff report Fundraising for the community July 4 fireworks show is already under way. Portales Roosevelt County Chamber of Commerce Director Karl Terry said one reason for the head start is because organizers came up short of last year’s $11,000 goal. “From donations, we had raised $8,800, and once we put in expenses and taxes, we lost between $1,400 and $1,500,” he said. Terry said another reason for the early start is that last year the company providing the fireworks was bought by another company. “This company had dif...

  • It was nice fishing with dad again

Local columnist link Kitsana Dounglomchan There are three reasons I will wake up before the sun rises: there’s a fire in the house, I have to work, or I’m going fishing. I like the last reason the best. So it was with great anticipation that I awoke in the wee hours of the morning on Wednesday to go fishing with my dad in the San Francisco Bay. But this almost didn’t happen. Our relationship had broken down and was in need of repairs, like a vacant home in a once-... Full story

  • ENMU misleads about mascot change

Guest columnist link Scot Stinnett Eastern New Mexico University is considering whether or not to drop the Zias as the mascot of the women’s intercollegiate athletic program. • There is no wrong way to write

    Alisa Boswell

Managing editor link Alisa Boswell A couple of attendees of this year’s Jack Williamson Lectureship told me they weren’t much as writers, but they love to come, because they enjoy science fiction. It struck me how rare it is to find someone attending writer workshops and discussion panels who do not actually write. It was a little refreshing to see people who just enjoy hearing the various perspectives on reading, writing and genres (in this case, science fiction). Having been... Full story

  • Muleshoe alcohol sales back up for debate

    Kevin Wilson

Staff writer [email protected] Even after seven years, there’s still a deja vu feeling in Muleshoe. It is the third election on the matter since 2008. The ballot for the May 9 election gives city voters the choice to allow or decline, “the legal sale of all alcoholic beverages for off-premise consumption only.” Proponents argue that Muleshoe and Bailey... Full story
