  • No one is good at casualty calls

    Rube Render|Updated Nov 7, 2017

Saturday is Veterans Day. When the flag passes you at the parade, stand and salute or place your right hand over your heart. Thank you. Here’s a thought experiment for you. Since you know a lot of the folks who live in Curry County, you need to get the newspaper from a large metropolitan era anywhere in the country and start reading the obituary column. You’ll be reading about the death of folks you don’t know and have never met. When you find some young adult who died tragica...

  • Remember 'innocent until proven guilty'

    Kent McManigal|Updated Nov 7, 2017

The witch hunt swirling around accusations of sexual misconduct and rape in the entertainment industry exposes the worst in people. Both those who may have done wrong, and those excited to join the dog pile to tear the accused to shreds. I understand that few people want bad guys to get away with their crimes. Neither do I, although I probably have a different idea of what “justice” means. I probably also have a different idea of what constitutes a crime. Those calling for...

  • Fake news may be downfall of social media

    The Sacramento Bee|Updated Nov 7, 2017

The old saying about a lie traveling halfway around the world while the truth is still putting on its shoes has never seemed more relevant than in this new era of propaganda-pushing Twitter trolls and fake Facebook users. But here’s a truth that we hope sinks in quickly in Silicon Valley: Without major changes to the way business is done at Facebook, Twitter and Google, the regulations that these California companies have spent years trying to avoid could become a reality. That’s a scary thought, the government regulating an...

  • Four Curry County teams embark on state volleyball tournament

    Peter Stein|Updated Nov 7, 2017

Volleyball playoff season has the senses heightened. Every play, every point, can be critical. Any dig, kill or block could be the start of something, launching a team on a state-championship run. Or it could set off a downward spiral that brings a team’s season to a halt. And it’s into this situation that four Curry County volleyball teams — Clovis, Texico, Melrose and Grady — tread on Thursday, when the state district tournament begins at the Santa Ana Star Center in Rio Rancho. Clovis (11-10), 6A The Lady Wildcats have ha...

  • Roosevelt County teams eye volleyball trophies

    Eric Murray|Updated Nov 7, 2017

ELIDA — Very few high school athletes can claim that they've won a state title in any sport, but for two Elida High School seniors, winning is all they've ever known. Elida seniors Lacy Ferguson and Kasyn Creighton already have seven titles apiece — three in volleyball, three in basketball and one in track. With this weekend's state volleyball championships on the horizon, the opportunity to add an eighth title — and go a perfect 4-for-4 in their high school volleyball caree...

  • Official proposes nuisance, mobile home ordinances

    Eamon Scarbrough|Updated Nov 7, 2017

PORTALES — A proposed solution to county properties kept in sub-standard condition drew both supporters and skeptics at Tuesday's Roosevelt County Commission meeting. No consensus was reached. Geographic Information Systems Manager Johnny Montiel said during his department report that he has received complaints about mobile homes encroaching into the county's right-of-way and becoming nuisances to other county residents. After receiving the most recent complaints, Montiel m...
