Democrats strengthened their hold on the Senate but failed Tuesday to recapture the majority in the House of Representatives they lost two years ago. President Barack Obama, in his freshly authorized second term, will face the same divided Congress in 2013 that has bedeviled efforts to enact his major legislation. "Now that the election is over, it's time to put politics aside and work together to find solutions," said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., who may have a slightly bigger working majority — but not as...
President Pro Tem Tim Jennings of Roswell has lost his Senate seat after 34 years. He was the highest-profile Democratic target of a ferocious campaign by Republican Gov. Susana Martinez and her political allies. The other top Senate Democrat with a bull's-eye on his back, Majority Leader Michael Sanchez, fended off his GOP opponent Tuesday, according to unofficial results. Jennings lost his District 32 seat to GOP newcomer Cliff Pirtle, according to complete but unofficial election returns giving Pirtle 52 percent of the...

New Mexico Rep. Dennis Kintigh paced the floor of a classroom in the Jack Williams Liberal Arts building Wednesday night on the Eastern New Mexico University campus. A dozen students sat in silence, waiting for an answer to the question of what was your favorite case? "Favorite is a sunny word," Kintigh said at last. "There's too much hurt. You put people in prison but that's not success. It's justice." Kintigh was talking to ENMU students about his 25-year career as an FBI agent and what he experienced while in the field whi...

The Portales City Council's plans to replace retiring City Manager Tom Howell at the end of next year changed after councilors met Tuesday for a workshop. Initially councilors planned on hiring a separate position under Howell to shadow him and train for the position with his guidance. Councilors agreed now they are looking for Howell's replacement and not a trainee because it served no purpose to hire another position that matched Howell's job requirements. Their goal is to have Howell's successor shadow him for a period of...
My shelves sparkle with treasures I've picked up for pennies over the years at the annual used book sales hosted by the Friends of the Portales Public Library. Some of my favorites are a 1921 collection of inspirational poetry, a yellowing volume of Rudyard Kipling's humorous tales, and a like-new paperback Eva Ibbotson story that my daughter and I somehow missed one season when we consumed her works. The 2012 version of this treasure hunt opens at 5 p.m. today, and will continue through Saturday in the library meeting room.... Full story

WASHINGTON (AP) — His lease renewed in trying economic times, President Barack Obama claimed a second term from an incredibly divided electorate and immediately braced for daunting challenges and progress that comes only in fits and starts. "We have fought our way back and we know in our hearts that for the United States of America, the best is yet to come," Obama said. The same voters who gave Obama another four years also elected a divided Congress, re-upping the dynamic that has made it so hard for the president to...
There's fresh data to indicate far fewer military personnel and dependents used absentee ballots to vote this year than did in 2008. But beware of politicians or pundits who rush to label such data as proof military voters are being "disenfranchised," voting experts caution. Through Oct. 28, 846,442 military personnel, voting-age dependents and U.S. civilians living overseas had downloaded the Federal Post-Card Application (FPCA) from the website run by the Federal Voting Assistance Program (FVAP). That's down 21 percent... Full story
