  • Official won't face weapon charge

    David Grieder|Updated Oct 9, 2017

A Dallas grand jury last month declined to indict a Clovis city employee on a weapons charge from this summer. Clovis’ Information Technology Director Paul Nelson was arrested on a work-related trip June 11 after a Transportation Security Administration employee at Love Field Airport found a loaded semi-automatic .380 caliber handgun inside Nelson's backpack at the main security checkpoint, according to records from the Dallas Police Department obtained last week by The Eastern New Mexico News. “Nelson stated he forgot tha...

Ledrian "Moses" Fletcher was born and raised in Clovis and has loved to play sports since his early days of attending Cameo Elementary School. He grew up loving to play football but was always told he was too small for the sport. He tried his hand at softball but it lasted one week. But mixed martial arts (MMA) was another one of his loves. He said he has watched martial arts movies for years. He has been inspired by the greats. Randy Couture, retired mixed martial artist, is...

The District 4 vacancy will be filled by appointment from Gov. • Declare war on unjustifiable weapons

    Wendel Sloan, Columnist|Updated Oct 9, 2017

Some reflexive patriots, up in arms about blacks protesting experiences they’ve never endured by not observing rote rituals, ironically imagine they need military-grade weapons to protect them from the government the national anthem represents. The FBI defines a mass shooting as, “Four or more shot and/or killed in a single event at the same general time and location.” According to Newsweek, the library shooting in Clovis “marked the 244th mass shooting in the U.S. in 2017. To...

  • When rain will stop, who knows, who cares

    Karl Terry, Columnist|Updated Oct 9, 2017

I grew up reading the rain reports from around the county in the local newspaper. The editors had the farmers trained to call in their rain totals after a storm and color was added by interviewing a few of the local dirt tillers. Examples of some of those reports went something like this: • “We got 6-tenths of gentle soaking rain that fell all night.” • “I had an inch and a half when I checked at 5:30 this morning then another 2-tenths by 10 a.m.” • “It came down real hard...

  • NBA won't have problems like NFL

    Kevin Wilson, Managing Editor|Updated Oct 9, 2017

Over the last week, a few news items have come to my attention, and I just think the mob is wrong. Contrarians, unite: • NBA Commissioner Adam Silver, when asked about recent NFL protests during the national anthem, said he expected his players to stand during the anthem. The general reaction I’ve seen from fans has been a sarcastic, “Good luck with that.” But I think the NBA won’t have the problems that people think it will. It goes back to the person on top. Since the day he began, Silver has been a commissioner who’s kep...

  • Vegas massacre hit close to home

    Rob Langrell, Publisher|Updated Oct 9, 2017

It was a jarring way to start a Monday morning. My wife woke me at the start of this past week to let me know there had been a horrible shooting in Las Vegas. It didn’t resonate right away, but as I cleared my eyes at 5:30 a.m. and began to catch up on the details, I read the appalling news. A gunman had opened fired on the Route 91 Harvest Festival country music concert. The death toll and the number of people injured had already climbed several times in the preceding hours....

  • Yes, a soda jerk can become president

    David Stevens, Editor|Updated Oct 9, 2017

They called him Maggie. Ernest Marsh came by the nickname as a teenager working in Clovis’ Elite Confectionery downtown more than 100 years ago. Slaughter Murray, the ice cream parlor’s owner, had a phonograph for his customers’ entertainment. “When no one else was playing a record, Ernest would put on his favorite tune, ‘When You and I Were Young, Maggie,’ and soon Murray and his buddies were calling him that,” Clovis historian Don McAlavy wrote in the history book “Curry C...

  • Q&A: Former ENMU coach Riley enjoying Warrior creation

    Eric Murray|Updated Oct 9, 2017

Considered to be the "architect" behind the Golden State Warriors' two recent NBA titles — and counting, Director of Scouting and former General Manager Larry Riley is a pretty popular man around NBA circles these days. However, before Riley broke into the NBA as a scout for the Milwaukee Bucks in 1988, he was the man responsible for leading the Eastern New Mexico Greyhounds men's basketball team as their head coach from 1978-88. In his time as coach, Riley helped the program...

    Kevin Wilson|Updated Oct 9, 2017

CLOVIS — For years, it's been assumed the current Parkview Elementary would see a second life as a senior center when Clovis Municipal Schools moves on to a new campus. But time was not on its side. With that in mind, the Clovis City Commission unanimously voted Thursday to start a scope of work on a new senior center at Hillcrest Park. The center, to be built in a phased process south of the Wellness Center, is expected to run about $6.9 million. The building would be 2...

  • DA proposals middle ground on bail rules

    Albuquerque Journal|Updated Oct 9, 2017

When the New Mexico Supreme Court approved new pretrial detention rules earlier this year — rules designed to help judges determine whether a criminal defendant should be held without bail — it was anticipated that as the sweeping reforms were implemented, fine-tuning would be needed. Now, three months after the rules took effect, eight of the state’s 13 district attorneys are proposing changes that provide needed clarity and uniformity in how detention hearings are conducted. The court should listen to them, just as it li...
