CLOVIS — The Clovis City Commission welcomed City Manager Justin Howalt in his first official meeting at the position Thursday. “We look forward to many, many days, months and years of success,” Mayor David Lansford said to Howalt, who rejoined the city following just over two years as executive director for the Eastern New Mexico Water Utility Authority. Howalt previously was city engineer and also takes on those duties again as the city never found a person to fill the position in his absence. Howalt said he met some depar...

  • ENMU regents recognize executive secretary

    Eamon Scarbrough|Updated Oct 9, 2017

PORTALES — Every organization needs some help from "behind the scenes" to function at its best. At Friday's Eastern New Mexico University Board of Regents meeting, one of those helpers was recognized. Deborah Bentley, executive secretary to President Jeff Elwell and the board, will retire on Oct. 31, so her colleagues honored her service. "Deborah has served this university for 21 years, and we've been blessed to have her," said Board President Dan Patterson. "We want you t...

  • Attorney sanctioned by court

The Staff of The News|Updated Oct 9, 2017

PORTALES — Attorney Eric Dixon was sanctioned for almost $9,000 in attorney fees this week for advancing litigation on “unfounded claims,” according to a court order from District Court Judge Donna Mowrer. “Mr. Dixon persisted in litigation and pressed a case he knew should not have been brought,” Mowrer wrote in a Thursday court order, referring to a civil claim Dixon filed in June 2015 for a client whose claims against Roosevelt County had been “dismissed without prejudice” 10 days before. Dixon can appeal the $8,947 sa...

  • Hounds say Falcons no pushover

    Kevin Wilson|Updated Oct 9, 2017

PORTALES — Eastern New Mexico University is 4-1 on the season, with its only loss on the road to the nation's second-ranked Division II squad. Texas-Permian Basin is 1-4, with its lone win coming against 0-5 Western New Mexico. But that doesn't mean this homecoming football game is one the Greyhounds can put in the rearview mirror before it's played. Falcons may be closer than they appear. The Falcons are midway into the second year of their program, and are losing games by a...

  • Clovis starts 2-6A schedule on road

    Peter Stein|Updated Oct 9, 2017

CLOVIS — The term "must-win" is used a lot in sports, but there are certainly situations that seem more fitting for it than others. Clovis' football team, for example, needs a win badly against Eldorado today at Wilson Stadium in Albuquerque (2 p.m.). The Wildcats are coming off a disappointing 35-28 double-overtime loss at Lubbock-Cooper last weekend, a game they had led 21-0 in the first half. The week prior they had a bye, so they haven't tasted victory since blanking G...

  • Elida moves to 11-0 with four-set win over Floyd

    Eric Murray|Updated Oct 9, 2017

ELIDA — The Elida Tigers managed to avoid an upset and stay unbeaten, pushing past the Floyd Broncos in Friday night's District 4-1A volleyball showdown. After losing the first set to Floyd, 25-22, Elida took the final three sets, 25-19, 25-13 and 26-24. For some, Floyd was expected to be a cakewalk for the Tigers, and Elida coach Darrell Chenault felt it might have been his team's expectation. "We took them lightly," Chenault said. "We just came in here and thought they were...

  • Rams top Hope Christian to move to 6-1

    Peter Stein|Updated Oct 9, 2017

ALBUQUERQUE — This time it was a productive road trip for the Portales football team. Well, productive as in victorious, not as in scoring points. But, that's all the Rams wanted to accomplish against Hope Christian on Friday — just get out of Milne Stadium with a win. And they did, blanking the Huskies 16-0, mainly on the strength of a stingy defense and the leg of senior kicker Julian Tellez, who booted three field goals — the Rams' only points until Tyrese Dawson bolte...
