  • Clovis loses vote for AAU tournament

    Dave Wagner

After a one-year stop last weekend in Clovis, the AAU girls state basketball tournament will not be returning for 2004. Coaches voted to bring the event to Albuquerque next year at a meeting held during the tourney. Thirty-eight teams came to Clovis for championships in six age divisions. When it came time to consider next year’s site, 14 coaches voted for Albuquerque, 12 for Clovis and three for Hobbs. According to AAU girls basketball chair Jane Miner, two coaches for Clovis teams and one for a Portales squad weren’t pre...

  • Moments connect life, good or bad

    Judy Brandon

Several years ago, I went to a women’s conference and heard an array of speakers. The keynote speaker really stood out because her speech was simple. She only said four things: --Life is made up of moments. --Some of those moments are good. --Some of those moments are bad. --And most of the time we can’t tell the difference. I really didn’t understand it then, but now, I not only understand, I really do believe it. Life is made up of moments, and those moments add up into...

  • Pioneer Days celebration takes to the skies

    Janet Bresenham

Airabelle the Cow, a heifer-shaped balloon sponsored by the Southwest Dairy Farmers, will be one of many balloons launching Saturday. When 31 hot air balloons get ready to launch from Clovis on Saturday morning, John Sando hopes he will be aboard a special one named “The Desert Dancer.” “That would be awesome,” the Clovis teen said. “I’m like a military brat, so I’ve flown in a lot of things, but not a hot air balloon. It’s not as noisy as an airplane and it’s more of a natural thing because it’s not run by an engine. It ju... Full story

  • Clovis rodeo goes on despite rain

    Eric Butler

CLOVIS — A cowboy’s work still has to go on even when it rains. Naturally then, the rodeo does also. The first full night of the 33rd annual Pioneer Days PRCA rodeo went off on Thursday evening at the Curry County Mounted Patrol Arena — even if it wasn’t all as planned. No traditional parade of officials and rodeo queens took place before the competition, but a steady rain had stopped by the time Australia’s Lance Kelly went into the chute as the first bareback bronc rider. “There’s nothing more fun than a rodeo in the...

  • ENMU trio prepares for national rodeo

    Kevin Wilson

David Browder has been at the College National Finals Rodeo enough times to know a quality competitor when he sees one. By his standards, the Eastern New Mexico University rodeo coach sees three of them representing his team at this year’s CNFR. ENMU’s Chance Parsons, Kendra Jones and Dale Vickrey will be making their first appearance at the CNFR Sunday through Saturday in Casper, Wyo. But Browder thinks all three of them have a shot to compete despite their inexperience. “My philosophy is if you’re still breathing, you’ve...
