  • Ready to welcome you to free society

    Kent McManigal|Updated Sep 13, 2017

Are you ready for liberty? How ready? Few people are sufficiently ready for liberty to be willing to let go of government. At least not totally. Even while complaining about the corruption, expense, and incompetence that infects government at every level, they look for excuses to keep it around. They believe it can be fixed. I shake my head in wonder. What could they be thinking? Do they fear a free society? A society without someone else to run their life and make their...

  • Thankfully, Trump's no politician

    Rube Render|Updated Sep 13, 2017

When you ask a political operative a question, the politico will pause and run that question through some sort of filter in his head prior to answering. If you reach that person by phone, he is apt to say, “I’m in a meeting right now, but I’ll get back to you later today.” They rarely answer on the spur of the moment because the answer can come back to bite them. How many times have you heard a friend or acquaintance say, “Just once I’d like to hear a politician...

  • Base decision making should be independent

    Albuquerque Journal|Updated Sep 13, 2017

Bad Idea of the Week: Eliminating the presidentially appointed, nine-member Base Realignment and Closure Commission and relying instead on the Department of Defense and General Accounting Office to decide which U.S. military installations will be closed or shrunk. It comes courtesy of Sens. John McCain, R-Arizona, and Jack Reed, D-Rhode Island, party leads on the powerful Senate Armed Services Committee, who are suggesting moving forward with a new BRAC but eliminating the BRAC commission. While there’s no question the...

  • Clovis rides big second half to top Portales

    Eric Murray|Updated Sep 13, 2017

PORTALES — The Clovis High Wildcats scored seven second-half goals to run away from the Portales Rams 9-4 in Tuesday's boys soccer showdown in Portales. The seven goals are a new school record for a single half for the Wildcats (6-4). "On a smaller field like this — we're used to huger fields — it took us awhile to spread (Portales) out, kind of adjust," Clovis coach Greg Trujillo said. "We tried to work those overlapping runs that kind of opened up their defense and...

    Jamie Cushman|Updated Sep 13, 2017

CLOVIS — Some people choose to remember the events of Sept. 11, 2001, with quiet reflection or prayer. The 110-story climb is meant to serve as a reminder of...
