  • Build your life on Christ - a firm foundation

    Judy Brandon|Updated Sep 8, 2017

We all build our lives on something. The issue revolves around this question: Is that “something” what you would risk your eternity on? Let me explain with an experience from my childhood. In some of my early growing-up years in Kansas City, Missouri, Mother often took Susie and me into the city to explore museums or to shop at Macy’s. Those excursions were recreational and educational. We would shop all morning and then when noon came, we would head to the nearest Katz Drug...

  • Good hearts have room for lots of songs

    Curtis Shelburne|Updated Sep 8, 2017

I keep thinking that the folks up, way up, at the Red River Community House (Red River, New Mexico, elevation 8,650 feet) will one day wise up and get tired of us, but they haven’t yet. So last Sunday morning my wife and I were at RRCH on yet another of a nice string of Labor Day/Red River weekends. I helped lead worship at the Community House, and I planned to sing a concert there that evening featuring some of the great old “American Songbook” songs, the ones lots of us ha...

  • Flex time challenging in ag

    Audra Brown|Updated Sep 8, 2017

Time on the farm is a bit hard to explain. In one way, it is stretchy and flexible, but in the other direction it is undeniably set in its way. Yes, you can often start or end at a time that isn’t exactly precise, but there is usually a cold, hard interval that you have to get the job done within. So, you can start and stop on the thing that needs done, just as long as you are done before the real deadline comes. If you know how long the job will actually take to be done, this...

  • Regional football preview: Texico faces tall task

    Jamie Cushman|Updated Sep 8, 2017

TEXICO — The Texico High football team will be in for a challenge when it travels west to take on Fort Sumner. “They’re not ranked number one in 2A by accident,” Texico coach Pat Crowley said. The Wolverines will face a high-powered Foxes offense that has scored 94 points over its opening two games in the 7 p.m. kickoff today. “They run it and they pass it very well,” Crowley said. “They spread it around, they show you lots of formations.” Texico will need to watch out for Fort Sumner quarterback Jude Segura’s scrambling abil...

  • Volleyball roundup: Texico returns home for rout of Tatum

The Staff of The News|Updated Sep 8, 2017

TEXICO — After holding its own at the Moriarty Invitational last weekend, Texico returned home and more than held its own against Tatum. Maryelle Dickerman had 14 kills, and the Wolverines needed just north of an hour to send the Coyotes home with a 25-12, 25-2, 25-19 sweep at the Texico Sports Arena. The match was never in doubt for Texico (3-2), which trailed only one time all night — 7-6 in a third set — marked by liberal Texico substitutions and a pair of 6-0 runs by the Wolverines. "It was a good rebound game from Moria...

  • Rams play West Las Vegas in Homecoming Game

    Eric Murray|Updated Sep 8, 2017

PORTALES — Rams football coach Jaime Ramirez likes to find the best scout team matchups in practice when trying to simulate an opposing team. With Portales High School hosting West Las Vegas tonight — which happens to run the same 3-3 defense — this week's practices could prove to be that much more beneficial for the Rams. But if you ask Ramirez about his offense having an advantage when it comes to preparation, his tone quickly changes to not so fast. "We don't get the same...

After opening with back-to-back home games, and holding serve in those games by going 2-0, the ’Cats will spend Week 3 visiting Rio Rancho. Yes, that Rio Rancho. Eamon Scarbrough|Updated Sep 7, 2017

PORTALES —Suicide thrives in silence. That’s why a local organization is looking for actors in a play called “Saying Hello to Goodbye.” Jim Lee is a member of Project Sunrise — a group of Clovis and Portales residents dedicated to recognizing “the very real issue of youth suicide” — and the play’s writer.
