    David Stevens|Updated Jul 27, 2017

PORTALES - Maliyah Jones was only 22 months old, but she'd already developed an irresistible personality. "She was the sweetest, happiest, brightest little girl," said Janet Bradley, the toddler's cousin. "She was very talkative for her age, very smart, she remembered you, just so sweet." Maliyah died Tuesday after police said she was left in a hot vehicle for about 90 minutes by a daycare worker. A second child, whose name has not been released, was in critical condition...

On this date ... 1977: A teenager had found an octopus in an irrigation ditch near Fort Sumner. Eugene Sena Jr., 14, said he was washing his hands in the ditch southwest of Fort Sumner when he spotted the creature, about 1.5 inches in diameter, floating in the water. He poked it with a stick and discovered it was dead. But movement in the water alarmed a second octopus, which swam away. Sena said the second octopus was about 6 inches in diameter. Dick Hanes, a biology teacher...

  • Area schools' proficiency still below 50 percent

    Stephanie Losoya|Updated Jul 26, 2017

Area school districts are still crunching numbers, but most seem to be following statewide trends on test scores released this week. Most area schools showed more students are proficient or better in reading and math than a year ago. But still far fewer than 50 percent of students scored proficient or better in the tests. The New Mexico Public Education Department on Monday released the results from the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC)...

  • School lunch prices set to rise 10 cents

    David Grieder|Updated Jul 26, 2017

CLOVIS — School lunch prices will go up by 10 cents next year, according to a federal mandate. “I hate to say it, but we don’t have any choice but to approve it,” said Clovis Municipal Schools Board of Education Vice President Terry Martin at the board’s regular meeting Tuesday. A new United States Department of Agriculture regulation will bring the cost of “paid lunches” to $2.10 and $2.35 for elementary and secondary school students, respectively. The price hikes will not impact free breakfast, still available for...

  • Is sacrifice of freedom worth it?

    Kent McManigal|Updated Jul 26, 2017

The belief that good things can come through government is based in the superstitious belief that the wrong thing can be done in just the right way. It’s a Utopian dream. Make no mistake, everything governments do is built upon a rotted foundation. I’m not Utopian. I know people aren’t angels, but I also know they aren’t as bad as believers in government make them out to be. People usually do what they believe is in their best interest. Belief in government makes stealin...

  • There will be no Trump impeachment

    Rube Render|Updated Jul 26, 2017

For whatever reason, the term “impeachment” has been making a regular appearance in the media since Jan. 21. Democrats on the far left, alas I repeat myself, have the strange idea that if Donald Trump is impeached, Hillary Clinton will become president. They get this from reading blogs created by people who have never read the United States Constitution and the Presidential Succession Act of 1947 as subsequently amended to include the newly created cabinet offices. A rev...

  • AG jumped the gun suing Presbyterian before audit's done

    Albuquerque Journal|Updated Jul 26, 2017

In a classic New Mexico case of “Ready, Fire, Aim,” New Mexico Attorney General Hector Balderas has filed a lawsuit accusing Presbyterian Healthcare Services of defrauding the state and possibly engaging in criminal conduct as part of a long-running dispute over the amount of premium taxes the company owes. Except the lawsuit doesn’t actually say how much the AG thinks the state’s largest health care provider should fork over — because a separate audit of premium tax payments by Presbyterian and several other health pl...

    Eamon Scarbrough|Updated Jul 26, 2017

PORTALES — A district court judge said she will make a decision by Thursday on whether to reduce bond for a rape suspect. Judge Donna Mowrer heard testimony on Tuesday as part of a continuation from a Friday hearing. Roy Brown is in the Roosevelt County Detention Center on $50,000 bond. Craig Acorn, attorney for Brown, 29, argued his client “has all these ties to the community. There’s no reason to think that he’s going to do anything but join with his attorney and defend this case, as we’ve been doing vigorously from the...

  • Sheriff recall petition stopped in district court

    Eamon Scarbrough|Updated Jul 26, 2017

PORTALES — A petition seeking the recall of Roosevelt County Sheriff Malin Parker was stopped by a district court judge Tuesday. The petition, submitted by Portales attorney Eric Dixon on behalf of criminal defendants Cody Banister and Armando Pena, as well as the mother of a woman killed in a car chase involving police, was denied in a hearing in the Roosevelt County Courthouse. The hearing gave Dixon a chance to prove that Parker intentionally made false statements regarding the reliability of an informant who led to the a...
