  • A tale of two airport arrests

    Rob Langrell, Publisher|Updated Jul 23, 2017

While vacationing on the East Coast earlier this month, I heard an interesting news item about a man who had tried to carry a gun onto a plane. The gentleman worked for the taxpayers and was traveling on official business in June, headed to an out-of-state conference. He apparently had forgotten that his handgun was tucked away inside his laptop case — one of his carry-on items. It was discovered by a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) worker when the bag went t...

On this date ... 1972: A three-striped inhabitant of Cannon Air Force Base tried to gain unauthorized access to the 32nd Air Division Headquarters. Usually the security team would be called but this time a different type of specialist was needed -an entomologist team. The intruder was a skunk. The team extracted the animal with long poles, navigating it and any friend it may have brought with it into cages. 1972: Lanny Cotten, 17, used his expertise as a gas station attendant to help the police catch a petty larsonist...

    David Grieder|Updated Jul 23, 2017

CLOVIS — A statewide immigrant rights group has spoken out on reports of “horrible tactics” implemented last week by federal agents in Clovis, voicing concern for the “ripple effects” of disrupting the social and economic fabric of communities in eastern New Mexico. “At least eight field agents with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) in four unmarked vehicles arrived at dozens of homes (in Clovis) Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday banging loudly on doors and asking residents about their immigration status. At least ei...

  • Jaden Martinez out of soap box derby nationals

The Staff of The News|Updated Jul 23, 2017

AKRON, Ohio — Jaden Martinez’ run in the All-American Soap Box Derby ended quickly Saturday morning, but the Clovis 12-year-old got a lifetime worth of memories in Akron and neighboring areas. Martinez — Clovis’ representative in the national race in Akron, Ohio, came up third in a three-driver race to open Super Stock competition. However, Race 501 wasn’t a rout by any means — Ben Seaman of Pottstown, Pennsylvania, finished the course in 29.765 seconds, just ahead of Cookeville, Tennessee’s Luke Poore (29.884) and Martinez...

  • Campaign laws will improve with judicial guidance

    Albuquerque Journal|Updated Jul 23, 2017

Whom should government protect: A.) Voters who deserve to know who is shelling out cash to get someone elected, or B.) Campaign contributors who shell out big money in secret to get someone elected? New Mexico Secretary of State Maggie Toulouse Oliver, a Democrat, is unequivocally answering “A.” She just finished up a three-city tour on proposed changes to the state’s campaign finance rules — changes crafted from the bipartisan bill passed by the 2017 Legislature to beef up the state’s campaign finance laws, which have been g...

  • Friends worth fighting in war for

    Wendel Sloan, Columnist|Updated Jul 23, 2017

Former Clovis resident Ian Cooke’s experiences as a 19-year-old “tunnel rat” in Vietnam reminded me of my distant brush with the war. When the North overran the South , I was a Navy electronic spy on Guam—2,500 miles away. Eventually, more than 111,000 Vietnamese refugees were transported to Guam and housed in tent cities while being processed for resettlement—mostly in the U.S. I volunteered in some insignificant capacity, and in my job intercepted desperate messages...

  • Parole board got it right with O.J.

    Kevin Wilson, Managing Editor|Updated Jul 23, 2017

The $100 problem circulates on social media every few weeks, and invariably somebody gets it wrong. A woman swipes a $100 bill from a store’s register. Confident she has not been caught, she returns to the store and selects $70 in merchandise. She pays with the stolen $100 bill, and leaves with $30 in change. How much did the store lose? Your choices are $30, $70, $100, $130, $170 or $200. I’ve seen every answer picked, with wrong answers explained through tortured logic. Let’s assume the store starts the day with $500 in th...

  • Cool summer nights were great for kicking cans

    Karl Terry, Columnist|Updated Jul 22, 2017

Summer nights are special nights when you’re young. Regular school night bedtimes are suspended and the neighborhood gang can regroup after supper and look for even more mischief. Our favorite thing to do was a game called “Kick the Can.” I’m not sure how but we could play for hours. The way we played sometimes one game could go on for hours. Let me explain a bit. You started finding a big two-pound coffee can. I’m talking about a real steel can. You brought everyone...
