  • Drought impacts more than just soil

    Karl Terry CMI columnist

"This is dust storm country. It is the saddest land I've ever seen." Washington Daily News reporter and columnist Ernie Pyle wrote those words in 1936 after a trip across the drought-ravaged Midwest. They could sum up where we're at in eastern New Mexico in 2013. I knew things were not good on our land in eastern New Mexico and it hadn't been for a long time. A daytrip shocked me as to just how bad the drought has become. Even the hardy buffalo grass has dried to the point of near desiccation. As you step on a clump it...

  • In search of ponies: Drought takes toll on animals, too

    Sharna Johnson Local columnist

Sepia toned skies, roaring winds, heat and the one ingredient that could change it all — rain — grievously absent. Such is summer in New Mexico, one of those places where a rain shower doesn't do much more than make dirt circles on windows right before it evaporates. But even though hot, dry and yes, wind, are characteristics of the eastern plains, it can always get worse and it's already on the way there. It really is no surprise to see the entire region colored in deep red on the map, drab, dead brown being the only oth...

  • Be it person or pool, leaks seem dangerous

    Grant McGee Local columnist

The Lady of the House and I have one of those store-bought, above ground pools in the backyard. We set it up a few weeks ago. The Lady of the House reasoned if we set it up while the days were mild the probability was low that we'd get into one of those terse "discussions" that tend to happen whilst doing chores in the hot, hot sun. While we were outside a car pulled over. Inside were a man and a woman. "Is that the same pool y'all had last year?" asked the man. "My wife says it is and I say it isn't." "Funny you should...
