  • Someday comes too fast

    Joan Clayton

Remember those wonderful childhood dreams … "When I grow up I'm going to be…" As a little girl I dreamed of my knight in shining armor sweeping me away on that beautiful white charger. That "someday" finally came for me. My tall dark and handsome knight married me. We talked of having children "someday." That "someday'" came. Mark, our first born, blessed our home. Then Lance, our middle son brought more joy! Then Lane, our youngest, completed our family. The someday seemed too far off for the boys. Those happy, loving day...

  • My Turn - New 'Iron Man' wins cool points

    Alisa Boswell

I think the Iron Man 3 movie had the second installment beat a little bit in coolness points. I loved all three of the movies. They all had good action, good story lines and Robert Downey Jr. plays the role of Tony Stark beautifully. Not to mention, with all of the action, they are still appropriate for most children. But as awesome as Iron Man 2 was, nothing beats numerous Iron Man suits all flying in to save the day at the same time against an almost unbeatable enemy. That is what the hippies and gamers of my generation...

  • Animal cruelty charges being investigated

    CNJ staff

A De Baca County rancher could be charged with one or more counts of animal cruelty and have his cattle seized, according to 10th Judicial District Attorney Tim Rose. Rose said on May 17, members of the New Mexico Livestock Board, two veterinarians and himself searched the De Baca County rancher's property, inspecting about 500 to 600 cattle that were in poor condition due to malnutrition. Rose said they have reason to believe there could be more than 1,200 head of cattle on this rancher's property. Rose said the case is... Full story

  • Political debates can wait, focus on disaster relief

    The Santa Fe New Mexican

The latest natural disaster in Oklahoma should not become another political debate, but the tornado, its destruction and the path to rebuilding should prompt important discussions — after the recovery is under way, the dead are counted and buried and the rebuilding going strong. What we saw on Monday in Oklahoma, though, reminds us again of the overwhelming force of nature. Whole blocks laid flat, two schools destroyed and people's lives ripped to shreds — with dozens lost to the storm, including children huddled in the...

  • Column incubator for feds ideas

    Kent McManigal column

Federal employees must read my columns and use the warnings therein as a blueprint for future schemes, just as Ayn Rand's "Atlas Shrugged" and George Orwell's "1984" seem to have been adopted as suggestions for governing rather than as the dire warnings they should have been. Recent news that the National Transportation Safety Board is seeking to further lower the "legal standard" for the blood alcohol content that would be called "drunk" — to 0.05 percent — echoes a warning I gave in a previous column. I cautioned about a h...

  • Panel rejects Pentagon's request for base closings

    The Associated Press

WASHINGTON — A new round of military base closings is going nowhere in Congress. The House Armed Services readiness subcommittee passed a bill Thursday rejecting the Obama administration's request for more domestic base closings. Military leaders are cutting the number of troops and argue the drawdown will leave them with more installations than they need. The money saved by closing unused facilities can be spent on training and other essential operations. But military installations are often the economic lifeblood of the c...
