  • Attorney asks for dismissal in drug sting case

    Eamon Scarbrough|Updated Apr 28, 2017

PORTALES — A defense attorney fought tooth and nail Thursday to dismiss a grand jury indictment in the case of a Roosevelt County man arrested in April in a drug sting. Evan Arendell, the attorney for 38-year-old Armando Pena, told Ninth Judicial District Court Judge Donna Mowrer his client’s due process was violated because an inaccurate statement by Roosevelt County Sheriff Malin Parker aided in the formulation of arrest warrant for Pena and others. Arendell brought former Roosevelt County Sheriff’s Deputy Sonny Wilco...

  • Recognizing spiritual inheritance secret to contentment

    Judy Brandon|Updated Apr 28, 2017

I have a Facebook page. Through the past year, and through my son John Scott’s heart journey, the connection that Facebook provided us was quite valuable. Our daughter-in-law Dana posted constant updates. People responded on Facebook that they were praying for him. I welcomed this avenue of social media that allowed us to ask for prayer for John Scott. As a result, friends and even strangers were praying for him. We treasured all of their prayers. Yet, last week I heard a s...

  • Might be a good idea to cut back on technological fix

    Curtis Shelburne|Updated Apr 28, 2017

Face it. More than a few of us are addicts. For all addicts, the first step toward recovery is summed up in one word: honesty. That means admitting we have a problem. And we do. Nomophobia. That’s the official name for cell phone addiction. The term actually means “no mobile phone fear.” Of course, a phobia is an irrational or excessive fear. And “no mobile phone” means, in this context, that the digital device might be (Careful. I warn you, these are terrifying prospects...

  • I'll buy that load of manure

    Audra Brown|Updated Apr 28, 2017

There’s this thing that people do that I find curious. I believe it is most commonly referred to as composting. Folks apparently build or buy a rig that ferments the garbage. It looks to me like not enough fertilizer for quite a bit of work, but I see how it might be fine for smaller scale operations. Out on the flatland farm where I grew up, things like that aren’t hardly worth counting if you have to measure it in any unit smaller than a truck-load. To be fair, there are...
