  • 'Cats maul Monarchs

    Peter Stein|Updated Apr 7, 2018

CLOVIS — Blue skies, very little wind, but less-than-ideal temperatures. Two out of three wasn't bad for Clovis' baseball team as far as conditions for Saturday's doubleheader against Manzano were concerned. Especially since the Wildcats' percentages were better competitively speaking, as they went 2-for-2 by sweeping the Monarchs 2-0 in seven innings and 18-0 in five at Bell Park, improving to 17-3 overall and 4-0 against District 2-6A opponents. Sebastian Nunez fired a one-h... Full story

Annamaria Short was raised in Portales by her adoptive parents, Lee and Laura Baros. She was born in Albuquerque. Her father Lee is a retired letter carrier and her mother Laura plans to retire this May after 33 years of owning and operating a day care in Portales. Annamaria graduated from Broad Horizons, an alternative school, then went to college at ENMU. She earned a bachelors degree in sociology. Her first professional job was as an ENMU secretary for Upward Bound, then we...

  • Special counsel unnecessary in FBI abuse probe

    Albuquerque Journal|Updated Apr 7, 2018

The decision by Attorney General Jeff Sessions to assign the Department of Justice inspector general and a federal prosecutor from Utah to look into allegations of FBI abuses in its probe of Trump associates — rather than name another special counsel — has angered some in his own party who had been demanding another version of Robert Mueller. But the decision by Sessions is the better option for a variety of reasons. As Mueller and Ken Starr before him have shown, the special counsel adventure is virtually without bou...

  • Operation Spooky waylaid by bovines

    Wendel Sloan, Columnist|Updated Apr 7, 2018

Submitted from Charlotte, North Carolina, here is a condensed version of my travelogue of an in-progress trip stretching from Taos to the Tar Heel state. After a 43-year break, a fellow Navy spook (spy) on Guam from 1974 contacted me in June through Facebook. Because of the nature of our duties I cannot reveal their identity but will call them “Spooky.” After 10 months of social media cloak-and-dagger shadow boxing to make sure neither had professionally pursued our amateur vo...

  • Thanks for entertainment, mystery caller

    Kevin Wilson, Managing editor|Updated Apr 7, 2018

It’s probably not wise to adopt a life philosophy based on a stand-up comedy bit, but I’ve thrown caution to the wind. Somewhere after “In Living Color,” and before “My Wife and Kids” Damon Wayans explained his approach to parenting: If it’s funny, you’re not in trouble. Wayans admitted it got harder as life went on, and Damon Jr. had the same comedy chops as his dad. “Go to your room, and work on your timing.” I’d probably lived my life by this philosophy before I ever heard it. If somebody threw an insult my way in junior h...

Information on non-traditional sashiko, foods and nutrients to feed your brain, and bible journaling will be the featured topics on “Creative Living” on Tuesday at 9:30 p.m. and on Thursday at noon. (All times are Mountain.) Dorothy Brown is going to talk about non-traditional sashiko which is an old Japanese embroidery technique used to strengthen fabric or to mend them. It was traditionally used on indigo fabric. Today sashiko is a decorative embroidery stitch done on one...

  • Hole story took me back to childhood

    Karl Terry, Columnist|Updated Apr 7, 2018

After reading the story I just began referring to him as Prairie Dog Man. I’m talking about the guy living in the hole he dug on a vacant lot in Clovis. This guy was living out my dream, if not my childhood. Back in the days when my only independent mode of transportation was my trusty 10-speed bike, we designed a similar if not greatly less extravagant abode on a vacant lot in my neighborhood. One day we noticed an old garage door in this lot. Nearby was a hole. Put the t...

  • Spring cleaning bears pink fruit

    Dnieka Hartsfield|Updated Apr 7, 2018

Spring cleaning can be fun, especially when you find a few treasures while sorting through old shoes. It's almost like being reintroduced to your younger self when you were developing your sense of style, like sorting through old pictures of times you’ve forgotten but better with shoes because you get to experience them again. I'd forgotten how much I loved pink until I pulled out at least three pairs of randomly different shoes from the old crates I tossed aside years ago. T...

  • In tribute: Dustin Davis persevered from young age

    David Grieder|Updated Apr 7, 2018

CLOVIS — With persistence, kindness and high ambitions, Dustin Davis inspired his colleagues and friends and quickly made for himself a "blue family" at his job with Curry County's sheriff's office. Sheriff Wesley Waller recalled his first interview with Davis, who joined CCSO at age 21 after three years working at the county jail. Waller said he "detected that Dustin was having difficulty hearing me and was reading my lips with each question." The young man then explained t... Full story

On this date ... 1973: Oscar P. Cantwell of Clovis was the new lieutenant governor for the Southwest Kiwanis District 13. A longtime member of the El Desayuno Kiwanis Club of Clovis, Cantwell hadn't missed a meeting in a decade. In keeping with Kiwanis tradition, a banner marking El Desayuno as the "home club" of the sitting lieutenant governor was presented to the local organization. Several longtime Kiwanians posed for a Clovis News-Journal photo with the banner, including...

  • CHS grad cooks home plate specials

    Jamie Cushman|Updated Apr 7, 2018

ARLINGTON, Texas — One former Wildcat has gone from cooking for his friends in his Clovis home to cooking for the likes of George W. Bush, Matthew McConaughey and Nolan Ryan. Clovis High graduate Derek Brewster is the sous chef for the Capital One Club, the high-end, buffet-style restaurant for season-ticket holders located right behind home plate at Globe Life Park, the home of the Texas Rangers. As sous chef Brewster is in charge of setting the menu for the buffet enjoyed b... Full story

    Jamie Cushman|Updated Apr 7, 2018

CLOVIS — Debra Novo said she and her grandchildren like going to the Clovis Home, Garden and Lifestyle Show every year, but for different reasons. "I come back to just see everything that's here and see what I can find and see what's new," Novo said. "I come here for the candy," said Zoe Garcia, age 7. Zoe's sister Angel, 12, said she enjoyed the motorized toy truck with a dog on it that was being driven around the Clovis Civic Center by the Clovis Fire Department. "That w...

  • Hardy tidy up around town

    Jamie Cushman|Updated Apr 7, 2018

PORTALES — Whoever invented the concept of spring cleaning did not consider the bipolar nature of weather in eastern New Mexico. But clean they did Saturday at the Great American Cleanup in Portales, despite below-freezing temperatures that started the day. The combination of the cold weather and other events happening in the city resulted in a turnout of only a dozen people or so, compared to the 50-plus people that usually take part, Portales Deputy City Clerk Veda U...

  • Clovis sweeps Portales' George/Love Relays

The Staff of The News|Updated Apr 7, 2018

PORTALES — Friday's Barbara George/Jim Love Relays saw Clovis Wildcat dominance across the board, as both the Wildcat boys and girls track and field teams won the overall team standings. The boys scored 111.5 points, nearly 30 points ahead of second place, while the girls scored 119 points, good enough for a 27.5-point margin of victory. Clovis boys took both the 400 and 800 relay events, while Austin Fuentes and Burgin Foster won the 100 meter dash and pole vault events, r...

  • Ram football schedule tougher for 2018 season

The Staff of The News|Updated Apr 7, 2018

PORTALES — Portales High coach Jaime Ramirez didn't intentionally try to make his team's 2018 football schedule harder than it already was. But, to quote another football coach, it is what it is. Portales will replace three opponents this year, including District 4-4A rival NMMI. NMMI, along with Texico and Socorro, will not return to the slate in '18, as Goddard, St. Pius and Capital will take their place. "Re-classification of schools had an impact," Ramirez explained. "...

  • Hound baseball rally falls short

The Staff of The News|Updated Apr 7, 2018

STEPHENVILLE, Texas — Inclement weather forced changes to Saturday's schedule, as Eastern New Mexico and Tarleton State played just one game of their Lone Star Conference baseball doubleheader. Unfortunately for the Hounds (16-14, 2-8), who will now instead play a doubleheader today against TSU, Saturday's lone game still proved to be a loss. Tarleton State (21-13, 6-4) jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning, and held off a third inning charge by the Greyhounds to s...

  • Dexter sweeps past Portales softball

    Eric Murray|Updated Apr 7, 2018

PORTALES — Dexter softball's Bryana and Aryana Munoz made life difficult on Portales hitters during Saturday's doubleheader. Bryana struck out 15 Rams in a 5-1 Game 1 victory for the Demons, while Aryana had a three-hit shutout in a 5-0 Game 2 win. "They do a good job of hitting their spots. They're two different looks, that's what's nice about them. Bry has the speed, whereas Aryana kinda comes with the spin and induces balls. I personally think Ary's a little more fun to p...

  • Manzano sweeps pair from Clovis softball

The Staff of The News|Updated Apr 7, 2018

CLOVIS — High school softball fans got a lesson Saturday afternoon in just how confusing softball can be. Visiting Manzano had little problem with the doubleheader overall, claiming 16-3 and 12-3 wins as Clovis dropped to 0-16 on the season. The confusion came in the second inning of the second game, with Deandra Martinez hitting a leadoff double. After Martinez reached, Clovis coach Brandi Thomas contended it should have been Jaden Titus batting. It wasn't that the M...

  • Eldorado sweeps Clovis tennis squads

The Staff of The News|Updated Apr 7, 2018

CLOVIS — Before Saturday afternoon became Saturday evening, the Eldorado High tennis teams had scored a pair of team victories over the Clovis Wildcats. But Saturday afternoon's result seemed pretty inevitable while it was still Saturday morning. The visiting Eagles lost just 15 games in their 18 matches, and both the boys and girls teams notched 9-0 victories over the Wildcats at the Clovis Community College tennis complex. Clovis coach Brad Heath felt the Wildcat teams p...

  • Bustos, Parker triumph

The Staff of the News|Updated Apr 7, 2018

CANYON, Texas — Two Greyhound track and field athletes notched first-place performances at Saturday’s West Texas A & M Classic, while two others also set program records. Marcus Parker and Danee Bustos were both winners for ENMU on Saturday. Hannah Cabledue (pole vault) and Adilene Adame (hammer throw) set school records with their performances. Parker finished the 200 meter dash with a time of 20.63 seconds, while Bustos completed the women's 200 meter dash with a time of 24.15 seconds. Neither time, however, is eli...
