  • New hospital administrator says his world revolves around family

link Vince DiFranco Staff writer [email protected] Plains Regional Medical Center Hospital Administrator Vince DiFranco said his world revolves around family, which may have given Clovis an edge when he interviewed for the job back in October. “We are used to small towns, we kind of like the quality of life of a smaller community,” DiFranco said. “We just like the safety, security, the friendliness of a smaller community, and we have certainly found that in Clovi...

  • City changing airport card system

    Kevin Wilson

Deputy editor [email protected] The city of Clovis is changing what it means to be a card-carrying member at the Clovis Municipal Airport. The city will begin to roll out over the next six months a replacement to the current system of wireless cards that allow access to various gates and buildings on airport property. The system was discussed during the civil aviation board's monthly meeting at the airport. The airport has such a system set up already, but City Information Technology Director Paul Nelson said there are...

  • Lady Chaps sweep Zias

Staff report PORTALES — Designated player Sydney Beuthien homered in each game and drove in seven runs as Lubbock Christian swept a softball doubleheader from Eastern New Mexico University 8-4 and 13-5 on Tuesday. Trailing 2-1, Beuthien highlighted a seven-run sixth LCU with a grand slam. She added a second-inning leadoff homer and a fifth-inning, two-run single in the nightcap as the Lady Chaps (29-9) pounded out 31 hits in the twin bill. The home runs were Beuthien’s 15th and 16th of the season. Junior Kyra Sirag led the Zi...

  • Commissioners approve uniform stipend

Deputy editor [email protected] Curry County Commissioners approved an annual stipend Tuesday to help Curry County Detention Facility officers defray the costs of uniform items. During the commission’s meeting at Clovis-Carver Public Library, Detention Center Administrator Tori Sandoval requested an annual $150 stipend — then later, increased the request to $250 — for newly hired officers to purchase required equipment like boots, a “duty belt,” and key ring with a belt attachment. Sandoval prepared the request with Curr...

  • EPCOR official presents water update

Deputy editor [email protected] EPCOR presented to Curry County Commissioners the current state of Clovis’s groundwater supply, and the future appears rough. According to EPCOR District Manager Brian Daly, since 2008, the well water supply has decreased drastically. Daly said the total capacity for Clovis is currently 10.2 million gallons per day from 68 wells. In 2008, Daly said, those same totals were 15.2 million gallons per day from 28 wells. The average well capacity has also decreased from 350 gallons per minute t...

  • 'Breaking Bad' in top five, but not number one

    Kevin Wilson

Deputy editor My New Mexico driver’s license may be revoked over this, but “Breaking Bad” isn’t my pick as greatest television series in history. Before you shout, “Blasphemy,” that doesn’t mean I hate the New Mexico-filmed show starring Bryan Cranston. It’s top five. My criteria is, “If you could only watch Series A or Series B for the rest of your life, what do you pick?” Beating out “Breaking Bad” are: “The Wire,” “The Simpsons,” “Homicide: Life on the Street” and “Seinfeld.” But hey guys, you beat out “How I Met Your...

  • Looking up to the women of 'Mad Men'

Deputy editor In our house lately, it’s been a “Mad Men’s” world, and this week, my favorite character made it hers. Watching “Mad Men” recently has reminded me of the chauvinistic things women have put up with over several decades — if not centuries — for being the “inferior sex.” Right now, I’m in season seven. I’ve been watching this fabulous show since I graduated from college in 2011 — I’m pretty invested in it, and devastated to know that after this, there’s only one season left for Don Draper and his ex-wife Betty, my...

  • Easter time for planting

    Helena Rodriguez

Local columnist April showers bring May flowers. But that’s not the only reason I’m planting my petunias this week. My friend Josie DeLeon told me recently that she waits until after Easter to do her spring planting. “That is something that my dad (Transito Rodriguez) always believed in. That everything awakens after Lent,” Josie told me. This made sense to me. Easter is a time of resurrection and new life. I had always heard the rules of the fashion police: “Don’t wear white after Labor Day,” and “No white until Easter....
