  • Officer enjoys interaction most

Editor’s note: This is a weekly series profiling public service workers link Navarez Name: Daniel Navarez Title: Police officer, Portales Police Department What made you want to be a police officer? I married a girl and she had a kid so I thought she couldn't brag about her dad working at Wal-Mart, but she could brag about her dad being a cop. What's something about going on patrol that people may not see or know? One thing people don't realize is if we're having a slow day a...

  • Everything coming up roses

    Helena Rodriguez

Local columnist link Helena Rodriguez April showers bring May flowers. But that’s not the only reason I’m planting my petunias this week. My friend, Josie DeLeon, told me recently that she waits until after Easter to do her spring planting. “That is something that my dad (Transito Rodriguez) always believed in. That everything awakens after Lent,” Josie told me. This made sense to me. Easter is a time of resurrection and new life. I had always heard the rules of the fashion... Full story

    Kevin Wilson

Deputy editor link Kevin Wilson My New Mexico driver’s license may be revoked over this, but “Breaking Bad” isn’t my pick as greatest television series in history. Before you shout, “Blasphemy,” that doesn’t mean I hate the New Mexico-filmed show starring Bryan Cranston. It’s top five. My criteria is, “If you could only watch Series A or Series B for the rest of your life, what do you pick?” Beating out “Breaking Bad” are: “The Wire,” “The Simpsons,” “Homicide: Life on...

  • I look up to strong women of 'Mad Men'

Staff writer link Brittney Cannon In our house lately, it’s been a “Mad Men’s” world, and this week, my favorite character made it hers. Watching “Mad Men” recently has reminded me of the chauvinistic things women have put up with over several decades — if not centuries — for being the “inferior sex.” Right now, I’m in season seven. I’ve been watching this fabulous show since I graduated from college in 2011 — I’m pretty invested in it, and devastated to know that after this,...

  • Banana peel toss not representative of New Mexico

Santa Fe is known for many things — but being known as a place where an audience member throws a banana peel at an African-American comic is not an image we welcome. Yet that’s the story that shot around the nation, and even the world, after Christian Englander, 30, pulled the peel from his back pocket and tossed it at Dave Chappelle during a performance last week at the Lensic. The peel-tossing veered way too close to how racist soccer fans in Europe throw bananas at black players on the pitch. One headline on the web cal...
