  • Supreme refuge can be found in God, Christ

    Judy Brandon|Updated Apr 6, 2018

Anyone who has lived in eastern New Mexico and west Texas for any time knows that storms can appear in minutes from nowhere. Such was the case one January night many years ago when a snow storm of blizzard proportion swept the high plains, leaving cars stranded all along the highway. The highway travelers realized they needed some sheltered place away from the treacherous elements until the storm was over. So a certain elevator in a small West Texas community became the...

  • Life lesson found in two sweet songs

    Curtis Shelburne|Updated Apr 6, 2018

Here’s a tale of two sweet songs and, with them, a life-crucial lesson. The first song is a heartwarming ballad performed by Phillips, Craig and Dean, one of my favorite singing groups. “A scene so familiar at the old five and dime / A little boy waited his turn in line...” With excited eyes twinkling, he’s holding in his hand the candy he’d been saving his money to buy. The girl at the register smiles at him as he forks over the handful of coins but then winces; it’s not...

  • More than vehicles cause travel delays

    Audra Brown|Updated Apr 6, 2018

Traffic is probably the most commonly understood reason for a delay on the road. Next is some sort of weather that makes traveling impossible or slow. Neither is too common when you get a little bit out of town and you are on a high, flat desert. That is not to say, however, that there aren’t other things that get between a vehicle and its destination. Vehicles are scarce, and the average automobile doesn’t cause much trouble as long as it stays on the proper operating sur...

They were to join 10,500 other American military personnel already there as tensions continued to heat up in the country under the leadership of Gen. Manuel Noriega. Cannon Capt. Mike Kormanik said those leaving were considered on temporary assignment, but that they would stay "as long as needed." Kormanik said the...

  • Rams get set for George/Love Relays

    Eric Murray|Updated Apr 6, 2018

PORTALES — The Rams boys and girls track and field teams will host the annual Portales Barbara George/Jim Love Relays this afternoon, which features 12 schools from around the state. For Portales first-year head coach Chris Bachicha, today’s event is an opportunity for his program to make a statement. “The relays help to fortify our entire team,” Bachicha explained. “The relays count more than the individual races, and it really helps to spark the entire team. We’re hoping to qualify our relays (for state).” Joining Porta...

    Jamie Cushman|Updated Apr 6, 2018

DORA — Wind was on the minds of some Roosevelt County residents on Thursday, but not because their hats were flying off. Landowner Bill Rush touted the economic benefits that come from the energy-producing turbines on the Roosevelt Wind Farm and the planned Sagamore Wind Project, both south of Portales. Rush thanked U.S. Sen. Martin Heinrich, D-New Mexico, for the role he played in the projects. "Some parts of our state have beautiful scenery and therefore they have tourism a...

That’s because she was helping out with a different cause.
