  • Residents remember the day King died

    Eamon Scarbrough|Updated Apr 4, 2018

Fifty years ago today, James Earl Ray assassinated Martin Luther King Jr. in Memphis, Tennessee. The slaying inspired Americans black and white to take up the civil rights leader’s fight, which they continue today. Joyce Pollard of Clovis described April 4, 1968, as “a very sad, dark day” in Fort Hood, Texas, where she lived at the time. King had addressed death in some of his speeches — including one he made the night before his assassination — and Pollard was inspired by his conviction to live the best life he could. “T... Full story

  • Time internet giants rethink data sharing

    The Dallas Morning News|Updated Apr 4, 2018

It’s easy to forget how young the Silicon Valley companies that dominate so much of our lives really are. One need be only a freshman in high school to have been born in a time before Facebook existed. And a baby delivered on the day Google was incorporated would turn 20 only this September. In just the single lifespan of a teenager, those two firms — along with many other competitors and allies — have generated riches and international clout to rival the nation’s grandest commercial enterprises. Ad sales made Google...

  • Americans need more Robin Hoods

    Kent McManigal|Updated Apr 4, 2018

The middle of April is approaching fast; the time of the year when I hear a lot about taxes. Mention of taxes brings Robin Hood to my mind. I don’t think of him with the more recent spin that has been put on the legend, but in the original spirit of the tales. Robin Hood is a model of an ethical outlaw. He broke bad laws by doing what was right for the right reasons. His story has been misrepresented. In the original tellings he didn’t “rob from the rich and give to the poor,...

  • Rams blank Lovington

    Eric Murray|Updated Apr 4, 2018

PORTALES — A trio of first inning runs is all that starting pitcher Josiah Lucero and his Rams needed in a 6-0 shutout victory over Lovington baseball on Tuesday. Lucero went the distance, striking out nine and allowing just five hits. "Josiah did a good job the entire game, but I think it was really big for us to score the three runs in the first inning," Portales coach Dusty Nusser said. "It kinda got us a little bit of momentum going, because we knew there weren't gonna be...

  • Greyhounds announce 2018 football slate

The Staff of The News|Updated Apr 3, 2018

PORTALES — There’s plenty of toughness and turning back the clock in Eastern New Mexico University’s 2018 football schedule. The 11-game slate, announced Tuesday by second-year Greyhound coach Kelley Lee, features a tough slate just within Lone Star Conference play, and a few games against teams the Greyhounds haven’t seen in decades. The 11 opponents — six home, five road — finished 2018 at 68-58. “I think it’s probably going to be one of the strongest schedules in the country,” Lee said. “Our first three home games ar...

  • Prep tennis: Mesilla Valley edges Portales girls

The Staff of The News|Updated Apr 3, 2018

ROSWELL — Most tennis teams aren’t going to run the table in dual matches, so there’s no shame in absorbing a loss. Still, Portales’ 5-4 loss to Mesilla Valley in Roswell on Tuesday stung at coach Ann-Marie Bucksath a bit. It was a loss, Bucksath thought, that didn’t have to be. “We had a mental toughness day,” Bucksath said, “and we were not on the upside of that mental toughness.” As a result, Portales dropped to 3-1 in dual-matches. The Lady Rams’ No. 1 singles player Sarah Blaeser got them started off well, with a 6-1, 6...
