M onday was an important day for Northern New Mexico — not to mention for the state and even the nation. On that day, President Barack Obama officially designated the Rio Grande del Norte National Monument, preserving some 240,000 acres of our finest wilderness for generations to come. What a long time coming! Residents of Northern New Mexico, whatever their views on politics, should take a moment to thank the president for listening to the sportsmen, business people, tribal members and traditional residents of our north. D...

  • Double standard makes government its own counterargument

    Kent McManigal Local columnist

Civilization depends on unwavering respect for property rights, and the recognition of the right to defend property. Without the ability to own property, use it as you see fit, and defend it from those who wish to steal or destroy its value, we would still be living a nomadic stone age life. I don't know about you, but I enjoy some of the trappings of civilization, and I don't appreciate those who are tirelessly working to roll them back. If you can't feel confident about your ability to hold on to what is yours and use it...

  • Victory over sin, death, and the grave

    Joan Clayton

Many thoughts come to mind when I think of Easter. I call the upcoming celebration "Resurrection Day." I think of the great sacrifice Jesus made for you and me. I think of the pain, the shame, the agony he endured. He came to give us "life and to give it more abundantly." (John 10:10) How many of us have "real life?" To be lifeless in our minds, spirits and hearts is a wasted life. That's why Jesus came … to heal the broken hearted. If you are heartsick today Jesus is the Great Cardiologist. He performs heart transplants all...

  • My Turn - Reality TV can be just flat boring

    Alisa Boswell

I'm not going to lie, I'm not entirely sure I see eye-to-eye with the modern world's definition of television entertainment. Reality television is either surrounded with all the melo-drama we encounter each day, only depicted more dramatically, or it is just flat boring. I might get exc...
