CLOVIS — A 12-year old brought a toy gun to school and threatened to kill the people there. It may have been big talk without much to back it up, but it was enough for a Clovis jury on Thursday to find that he had committed aggravated assault upon a school employee and “unlawful carrying of a deadly weapon on school premises,” according to a news release from District Attorney Andrea Reeb. The news release said the child entered Marshall Middle School on Feb. 8 with a loaded Airsoft pistol. “Several students reported... Full story
RIO RANCHO — Another tournament, another championship game appearance for the Clovis Wildcat baseball team. This time it's the Sal Puentes Tournament for the Wildcats, who punched a ticket into today's title matchup with a 6-3 win over Rio Rancho on Friday night. Senior Connor Langrell scattered 10 hits in a complete game victory, and the Wildcats (11-3) took control of a tight ballgame with a fourth-inning rally that included three consecutive doubles. "Early, it was back... Full story
ODESSA, Texas — Maritza Rojas scattered four hits over five innings, and UT Permian Basin had four of its eight hits go for extra bases as the Falcons claimed their first Lone Star Conference win of the season, 9-1 over Eastern New Mexico Friday evening. Rojas went 2-for-3 with a triple and three RBIs to help her cause as the Falcons (12-22, 1-12) chased starter Hanna Gary in a six-run third and ended the game in the fifth via mercy rule. The teams will face off again today...
PORTALES — While there's not enough recorded history to absolutely, positively verify it, Friday likely marked the first time the Portales Rams have ever played the Wampus Cats. Not all firsts are good, though. The team from Atoka, Oklahoma, proved it by slugging its way to a 16-6 victory to open the Portales Invite on Friday morning. Ronnie Lowry went 3-for-4 with a homer, a double and six RBIs to lead a 17-hit attack for the Wampus Cats (7-3), a mythical mountain lion used...
ALBUQUERQUE — Clovis High's tennis team opened its District 2-6A season on Friday, and it was worth the wait for the boys, who beat Sandia on the road 9-0. With all the senior singles players winning straight sets and everyone else pulling their matches out, the Wildcats began district play with a crackle. "Great way to start the district," Clovis coach Brad Heath said. "The thing I like, even though we have seniors, they're all working hard, they're fighting for each...
CLOVIS — Isabel Garcia notched the biggest win of her young boxing career earlier this month by defeating 2017 USA Boxing regional champion Hannah Thompson. It's likely Garcia, 19, of Clovis, won't always see that caliber of fighter this year. But motivation isn't a problem. "My goal is not to lose, at all, in 2018," Garcia said. "I just keep that going in my head, and it makes me work harder." Garcia is getting ready for what should be a busy few months. She heads to...
On this date ... 1988: Clovis High School had the largest Future Farmers of America chapter in the state, according to a Clovis News Journal feature in honor of National Agriculture Week. Saundra Castillo, Jerry Birdwell, and Bill Morrison were the instructors for the CHS ag department. Castillo, a horticulture specialist, said students were growing bedding plants for flowers and vegetables in the school greenhouse. Sales of those plants were used to raise money to help support the school-owned farm and assist students with...
ROSWELL — Meet the new boss, same as the old boss. Eastern New Mexico University-Roswell has appointed a new interim president and he will be a familiar face for many in the school system. ENMU President Emeritus Steven Gamble, who retired in August as the Portales university's second-longest tenured president, will now take on the same position on an interim basis at the Roswell campus. "I think it will be a good experience for me and I hope it's a good experience for the R...

ROSWELL — Texico’s baseball team got a great outing from pitcher Ben Crist, and finally got its offense working in the middle and later innings to rout Shiprock 10-0 in six innings of Friday’s Colt Classic Tournament hosted by New Mexico Military Institute. The Wolverines improved to 5-1, thanks in large part to Crist’s one-hitter that included seven strikeouts and no walks. But every pitcher needs run support and the Wolves finally broke loose for some in the fourth after three frustrating innings. They stranded two...
CANYON, Texas — Though the Eastern New Mexico baseball team had a nice lead early, the Greyhounds couldn’t hold it and wound up losing 8-5 to West Texas A&M on the road Friday in the Lone Star Conference opener for both teams. The Hounds plated three runs in the top of the first inning, all on a homer by Julian Heredia. And they added one in the second on a fielder’s choice by Zach Shank, scoring Malcolm Smith to grab a 4-0 lead. A&M stormed back with three in the bottom of the third, and though Eastern did take a 5-3...
