  • I'll never support government dystopia

    Kent McManigal|Updated Mar 22, 2017

Utopia isn’t an option. Even if you had the power to set up society the way you think it should be, reality would step in and make your Utopia imperfect. Expect the unexpected and remember it’s impossible to plan for everything. The most important thing to keep in mind: No one can design a society. The belief that it can be done is a conceit common to governments and people who believe in them. Societies grow from the bottom up, they are not designed or imposed from the top...

  • Looks like Clinton dynasty is dead

    Rube Render|Updated Mar 22, 2017

I have written before that when Hillary lost the presidential election, the Clintons lost their raison d’etre. Cracks began showing in the Clinton Foundation when they informed the New York Department of Labor that they intended to lay off all 22 of the employees working at the Clinton Global Initiative on April 15, 2017. The official reason for filing was, “Plant Closing.” The real reason was loss of product. You can’t sell political influence if you don’t have political...

The Staff of The News|Updated Mar 22, 2017

HOBBS — If there was any positive for the Clovis High softball team Tuesday night in Hobbs ... at least it doesn’t count in district play? The former District 4-5A rivals battled Tuesday night, with the host Eagles taking a pair of easy 6-0, 12-0 victories. Hobbs (7-2) notched 19 hits, and Hobbs’ combination of Genesis Armendariz and Amy Vigil held Clovis to one hit on the night. Armendariz pitched a no-hitter in the first contest. Their first (pitcher) was amazing,” Clovis coach Brandi Thomas said. “She’s the best that w...

  • Ranchers find new means of water conservation

    Alisa Boswell|Updated Mar 22, 2017

PORTALES — Ranchers and dairymen have a new means of saving water but they also face a new danger, according to officials of the Roosevelt Soil & Water Conservation District. Mike Cone, chairman of the SWCD board, told Roosevelt County commissioners at their Tuesday meeting about his organization's recent "shade ball project." "What the whole theory and concept is on them is that you cover a body of water with them and number one, it helps with evaporation," Cone said of t...

    Kevin Wilson|Updated Mar 22, 2017

CLOVIS — The Clovis Municipal Schools Board on Tuesday voted to encourage students to take Preliminary SAT tests, but also gave students a way to opt-out. Board members agreed to a “presumed participation” approach to the test for 10th graders in the 2017-18 school year, following impassioned appeals from Deputy Superintendent of Instruction Joe Strickland and Clovis High Principal Jay Brady. • State grieves with Cannon for lost airmen

    Albuquerque Journal|Updated Mar 22, 2017

In New Mexico we celebrate — and often take for granted — our U.S. military forces. We turn out en masse for parades and fireworks displays. We jealously guard the budgets of our national labs, Air Force bases and Army missile range. We glance up at the flyovers. And we don’t think twice when we see a vehicle with a Purple Heart license plate parked next to one with a Disabled Veteran plate down the row from one with a National Guard plate. But there’s an unspoken risk and sacrifice that comes with having such a large a...
