  • Clovis man charged again in double homicide

    CMI staff

A Clovis man whose double-murder indictment was recently quashed by the state Supreme Court was hit with the same charges Friday in Magistrate Court. Enrique Deleon is accused of murder in the September 2011 shooting deaths of Joe Valero, 44, and Lupita Casteneda, 25, both of Clovis. Enrique Delon Deleon waived his right to a preliminary examination Friday on murder and an assortment of other felony charges stemming from the shooting at a backyard barbecue, according to...

  • NM proposal limits legislative email disclosure

    Barry Massey The Associated Press

SANTA FE — A House committee approved a proposal Friday that could protect legislators' email from being publicly disclosed through requests made under a New Mexico open government law. The proposed change in legislative rules unanimously endorsed by the Rules and Order of Business Committee will establish a policy for how the Legislature will handle requests under the Inspection of Public Records Act. Some lawmakers use email only through personal accounts rather than a legislative email system. House Republican Leader Donal...

  • Mustangs overcome Zias' fast start for sweep

    CMI staff

Eastern New Mexico University's softball team got off to a rousing start in the second game of Friday's Lone Star Conference-opening softball doubleheader against Midwestern State at Zia Softball Field when freshman right fielder Marley Pinon belted a first-inning grand slam. Unfortunately, the Zias weren't able to hold off the 22nd-ranked Mustangs. MSU finally pulled away with 10 runs in the top of the sixth and beat the Zias 15-5 to complete a sweep. The game ended after six on the eight-run rule. In the opener, the...

  • Odds with Cats in state opener

    Kevin Wilson CMI staff writer

If the Clovis Wildcats are heading into their first-round game with confidence, they've got plenty of reason to do so. Clovis is the fourth seed, and the top four seeds are 27-1 in the first round since the state went to a 16-team bracket in 2006. If the Wildcats were cautious going in, that would be OK, too. Since the format began, a double-digit seed has pulled an upset every season, including last year's win by Manzano in the 3-14 game. Wildcat coach Matt King said the Cats (20-6) are a little of both, but it has nothing...

  • Clovis city officials: Prairie dog poisoning finished

    CMI staff

The deed is done. The last of a potent poison aimed at putting a dent in the prairie dog population at Ned Houk Park was applied Friday, according to Clovis Parks and Recreation Director Bill Bizzell. The prairie dog eradication program was approved March 1 at a special city commission meeting. Adjacent landowners appealed to the city for help, saying they burrowing rodents would spread to their crops and land. Up to $25,000 was approved for an emergency budget transfer to purchase 250 containers of Rozol rodenticide to... Full story

  • Clovis school board to consider graduation date change

    CMI staff

Clovis Municipal Schools Superintendent Terry Myers is bringing in the Board of Education to help make a decision on changing the date of the CHS graduation. The event, slated for May 18, falls on the same day as the final day of the state's spring athletic championships. The board will hold a special meeting March 18 to discuss the issue as well as review future calendars for other scheduling conflicts. Myers said Friday the only suggestion that has been recommended so far is moving graduation from Saturday to Sunday. Joel... Full story

  • McGee: Wind brings back golden memories

    Grant McGee Local columnist

Coming to work the other day, I noticed the bright dawn reflecting on the office windows and remembered a story my dad told me about "The House with the Golden Windows." As a young guy I was forever ramblin' around in the family car. One weekend he and my mom went away and when they came back he wondered aloud, very aloud, how I managed to put 532 miles on the family car while they were gone. "Let me tell you a story," he said. "There was a boy who grew up in the mountains in a simple cabin," said my father. "He may have... Full story

  • In search of ponies: Animals weather weather, whether they like it or not

    Sharna Johnson Local columnist

Brown skies, tumbleweed invasions and air so dense the eyes can't penetrate it nor can the lungs tolerate it. Waking in the morning to the sound of dirt stinging windows and the roof swelling and groaning eventually means that somewhere between deciding what to wear or eat for breakfast, the mind flickers to the brief thought of tossing all earthly possessions into the car and driving to someplace the wind can't reach. And it wouldn't be the first time the wind chipped away at the patience and comfort, literally pushing...

  • Railroads are tremendous gift

    Clyde Davis Local columnist

It was the first night of spring break. There they sat, Mikayla and her Dada (a name for a grandpa) watching the Channel 3 TV special on scenic railroads. What a way to transition from winter into spring! Plans for warmer weather began to form in my mind. I have been fortunate enough to ride on two scenic railroads, the Pike's Peak cog railroad in 2001 and the Cumbres Toltec railroad in the late 1980s. I have been able to be around, and see, other such wonders in action. I never knew until we watched this show, though I have...

  • Vehicle may be old, but I can fix it

    Karl Terry Local columnist

Our lives have become way too complicated and so have our automobiles. Mysterious instrument lights come on for a while then go away. Malfunctions pop up and then correct themselves. I'm pretty comfortable driving with an instrument panel that isn't completely functioning. Growing up I frequently drove a truck that had a speedometer that never worked and I've driven lots of vehicles on which the speed didn't register correctly. My dad always told us to drive using the tachometer or the sound of the engine rather than the...

"If she didn't knock down those threes," coach Clay Stout said, "we'd be in a world of hurt." Cissell, the only senior on the Lady Rams' roster, played her last game in Portales. She led the team with 11 points, while junior Savannah Vincent... Full story

  • Top-seeded Lady Cats rout Alamogordo

Alamogordo's Stephanie Anderson buried a 3-pointer on the Lady Tigers' first trip down the court Friday night. Suffice it to say, they had few other highlights. CMI staff photo: Tony Bullocks Clovis sophomore Danni Williams knocks away a inbound pass to Alamogordo's freshman Lauren Guinn in the third quarter of Friday night's first round playoff action at The Rock.
