Organizers are hoping that the pursuit of higher education will prevail at this year's Southeastern New Mexico Regional Science and Engineering Fair at Eastern New Mexico University. This is the largest science fair in the 55 years it's been held at ENMU's campus, according to ENMU professor and fair director Ken Cradock. This regional fair for grades six through 12 is part of the Intel International Science Fair, and winners will qualify for the state science fair in April. Exhibits are open to the public from 2 p.m. to 3 p....
This weekend promises to be an eventful one as I attend my first live hockey game and a high school musical. I recall in March of last year going to Portales High School to take pictures of a rehearsal for "My Fair Lady." I remember being struck by the fact that the student playing leading character Henry Higgins captured the arrogant yet nonchalant personality of Higgins very well. Little did I know that several months later, I would get to know this Portales High student and discover not only is he an actor, but a...

Starting today, online readers of the Portales News-Tribune will be asked to take a short survey to access full versions of stories. The PNT is part of Clovis Media Inc., which includes the Clovis News Journal, the Quay County Sun and Cannon Connections. Along with the PNT, the Clovis paper is partnering with Google to implement a survey component on the two websites. Many news websites are being switched from free pages to partial and full paywalls to recoup some business costs to produce the news and ads in print and... Full story
The Tucumcari-Quay County Regional Water Authority armed itself Thursday for a long legal battle to pull the plug on the Ute Water Project. The authority hired a Santa Fe legal firm to represent it with plans to ask for a new federal appeals court review. It also created a committee to lobby state and federal lawmakers against the Ute project. The moves are the latest ripple in a wave of attempts by various Quay County entities to stop the project before it can begin siphoning water from Ute Lake to boost dwindling supplies t... Full story

In a world that would ignore God, we often feel like aliens on a different planet. Daily you and I are bombarded by ungodliness. Our culture seems to be on a downhill side. Children are murdered. Corporations are crumbling because of individual selfishness and greed. Terrorists are on a mission to kill Christians and Jews. Every reference to the One and only true God in this country is being put on trial. Have you noticed what has happened to this country with the absence of God and his principles? In ancient times, the...
During my earlier days, I watched individuals make adobes along the floodplain of the Rio Grande. They mixed clay soils with water, sand, and straw and placed the mixture into rectangular molds. The bricks made were used as building blocks for dwellings. I asked the workers, "Why the straw?" Their answer was, "Cause that's just the way we do it." Questions unanswered, I did not search further until a few years later when I was watching a pair of barn swallows build a nest. They used a mixture of mud and grass stems, which...
So, you're still not a libertarian? Why not? Let's get beyond misguided religious excuses, justifications regarding "fairness" and overblown, irrational fears. What all these excuses boil down to — as reasons why you can't embrace libertarianism — is wanting to feel OK with having someone available to hurt other people who are not harming you. Yes, that really is at the foundation of all acts non-libertarians are trying to justify. Libertarianism recognizes your absolute right to self defense when you are being attacked,...
Rio Grande High School wrestler Nick Chavez has a state championship while the justice system, some South Valley political power brokers and the anti-bullying efforts of Albuquerque Public Schools all have a black eye. A state senator, a Bernalillo County commissioner and an APS Board member all saw fit to use their official clout and hearsay knowledge to intervene on behalf of Chavez after he was suspended and therefore not eligible to compete for a state title last weekend. They all said they wanted only to make sure there... Full story

New Mexico Peanut Growers Association President Wayne Baker is not a big fan of the upcoming Food Safety Act. "If this thing is passed, they need to put farmers on the endangered species list," said Baker Thursday as he introduced guest speaker David Lucero with the New Mexico Department of Agriculture, who was at the organization's annual meeting in Portales to take about new federal rules. Lucero, who serves as the liaison between the FDA and ag producers, said the purpose...
