  • Roads in Texas Panhandle reopen following storm

    The Associated Press

AMARILLO — Some roadways in the Texas Panhandle are reopening Tuesday as sunny conditions begin to thaw ice and snow-packed surfaces slickened by a massive blizzard that blanketed the region. Interstate 27 has reopened between snow-hammered Amarillo and Lubbock, about 120 miles to the south. Units with the Texas National Guard have worked to clear Interstate 40 from the Oklahoma border to the New Mexico state line. The highway reopened Tuesday afternoon. U.S. 287 has reopened in both directions, as have U.S. 385, U.S. 60 a... Full story

  • Where does the white goes when the snow melts?

    Curtis K Shelburne Religion columnist

Ah, we're snowed in today, and I love it! I am a snow man, no doubt about it. Not the abominable kind, I hope. Just the very ordinary kind. ("Snow person" might have been clearer, but that would be dangerously close to the politically correct ravaging and neutering of the English language evidenced by such atrocities as "chairperson," a term that should be relegated to bad science fiction movies.) I just love snow. Whoever said that "there is nothing in all of nature more beautiful than snow" was right. I never get enough of...

  • Our viewpoint: Washington needs more solutions, less bickering

    Clovis Media Inc

An age-old political game is taking the United States to the brink of fiscal calamity once again. This time, with "sequestration" set to take effect Friday, the objective once more appears not to be to find a political solution, but only to lay blame at the feet of the other side. Here's an idea for Congress and the White House that no one in Washington seems capable of understanding any more: Stop blaming and start governing. That is the only reason we sent you there in the first place. At issue are automatic budget cuts.... Full story

  • Local burger choice worth sharing

    Kevin Wilson CMI columnist

It was a dark and stormy night … followed by a bright and stormy day, with a blizzard that summoned Alice Cooper and belted out, "Schools … out … for … Monday." I was set to go into the office, where hot chocolate and coffee were already available, but I needed more. The restaurant had two customers at 12:01 p.m., clear evidence of the stormy day and its ability to keep people at home, but that just meant a clean griddle for the only food that brings heat to the equation. I arrived in the office, unpacked the plain white b... Full story

  • Blizzard takes life of Clovis farmer

    Christina Calloway PNT senior writer

Even though he was 81 years old, it came as no surprise to family members that when Monday's blizzard hit, Elbert Mitchell grabbed a shovel and headed out to clear the driveway. Concerned for his safety, Beulah Mitchell asked him to come inside, but she said he told her he was almost through. Elbert Mitchell never made it back into the house, falling and suffering a head injury his doctor later determined was caused by a heart attack. Elbert Mitchell "He went to the farm every...

  • Experts: Storms won't break drought

    JIM SALTER The Associated Press

ST. LOUIS — The blanket of snow covering much of the Great Plains after two big storms in less than a week may provide some relief for parched areas, but it's no "drought-buster," experts said Tuesday. States such as Kansas, Nebraska and Oklahoma have been among the hardest hit by the drought that at one point covered two-thirds of the nation. Now, they're buried under snow from two storms just days apart that dumped nearly 20 inches on Wichita, Kan., and more than a foot in parts of Oklahoma, Nebraska and other Plains s...
