Honored for ENMU were Ezra Bagwell, Lorenzo Juarez, Coley Norcross and Danee Bustos. The four selections were the most for any ENMU track team, indoor or outdoor, since the 2008 outdoor season. Bagwell received LSC Academic honors last year during the indoor and...

  • Rams cruise to district tourney title

    Eric Murray|Updated Feb 23, 2018

PORTALES — Portales girls coach Wade Fraze expressed some concerned last week about his team having a 10-day layoff, heading into the District 4-4A championship game. On Friday night, however, those concerns were alleviated for at least a night, with Portales topping the Moriarty Pintos 53-38. While the win didn't exactly mirror their first two victories against Moriarty (24-4, 5-3), earlier in the season, the Rams (24-2, 7-0) still managed to do many of the same things on...

  • Clovis baseball team sweeps Hobbs in twinbill

The Staff of the News|Updated Feb 23, 2018

CLOVIS — Clovis High's baseball team seems capable of making a state championship run. And Thursday, the Wildcats took the first two steps in that direction. Getting the pitching that should be their trademark this season and more than enough lively bats chiming in, the Wildcats brought the brooms out and swept a doubleheader of rival Hobbs, outscoring the Eagles by a gaudy 18-1 count by winning 10-0 and 8-1 at Bell Park. "Getting the first two is huge, coming out and... Full story

  • Texico stung in 5-3A title game

    Peter Stein|Updated Feb 23, 2018

TEXICO — Texico High still has a state championship to chase, one more trophy to try and add to its collection this season. The Lady Wolverines will not be adding a District 5-3A trophy to go with the EPAC tournament hardware they claimed last month. Friday night sealed that deal as a furious fourth-quarter rally fell short and they lost to Clayton 51-48 at Texico High School. Down by 10 in the fourth, Texico didn't give in, stormed back, had a chance to tie right down to...

  • Reports: Officer searched man before jail standoff

CLOVIS — During the hours-long suicidal standoff Wesley Flores held this month at the county jail, he asked repeatedly for three things: A cremation, a do-not-resuscitate order and a cigarette. So say two of the numerous Clovis Police Department reports released Friday, detailing the arresting agency's end of the armed hostage situation Feb. 1 that concluded when Flores shot himself in the face with a pistol he pulled from his clothing. The reports also show Clovis Police...

  • La Cueva cruises past Clovis girls

The Staff of The News|Updated Feb 23, 2018

ALBUQUERQUE — A weeklong run through the District 2-6A tournament was not in the cards for the Clovis Wildcats. A cold-shooting Wildcat squad was buried in the first half, and couldn't do much after halftime in a 62-43 loss Friday night at La Cueva. The second-seeded Bears (15-11), led by Brooke Nelson's 27 points, move on to Saturday's 5:30 p.m. title game at Eldorado. Friday's contest was a situation where a win definitely would have helped the Wildcats (17-12), probably...

  • Clovis man gets six years in robbery

    David Grieder|Updated Feb 23, 2018

CLOVIS — For robbing a sandwich shop this summer — among other charges — a Clovis man was sentenced Friday morning to six years in prison. But it could have been worse for him. "The state has offered you an excellent deal on this," Judge Drew Tatum told Kelby Spain of the plea agreement that spared him a potential of more than 17 years in the Department of Corrections. Spain, 23, pleaded guilty to the Aug. 18 robbery of Clovis' Subway location on the 700 block of East...

  • Reporter's notebook: Breakfast for a journey

    David Grieder|Updated Feb 23, 2018

If you see hundreds of hungry souls swarming a church this morning, it’s not a matter of confused Christians coming to worship a day early. It is a big old honking fundraiser breakfast for upcoming youth group trips. Breakfast will be served from 6 a.m. to 11 a.m. “This year we expect somewhere between 600 and 800 to come through,” Parkland Baptist Church Youth Pastor Aaron Boydstun said of the 15th annual pancake breakfast. “That’s our hope.” And hope is a thing with feathers. But pancakes are a thing more common...
