  • Clovis tennis team has new, familiar elements

    Kevin Wilson|Updated Feb 22, 2018

CLOVIS — Even with a pair of new coaches, and promises of a new facility soon, there's still some familiarity for the Clovis High tennis programs. The boys and girls teams, which open the season Friday at Lovington's Wildcat Open, are each dealing with losing three or four seniors from last season. That's a rounding error in football, but it matters on tennis teams that usually only boast seven varsity members. New coach Brad Heath thinks Clovis should be competitive going i...

  • Rams upset Moriarty to return to 4-4A title game

The Staff of The News|Updated Feb 22, 2018

MORIARTY — After downing Ruidoso for a third time on Tuesday night, Portales was hoping that the reverse result wouldn't be true when traveling to Moriarty on Thursday night, in a District 4-4A boys basketball semifinal. Luckily for the Rams (16-11), they avoided a season sweep against the Pintos, taking a 49-44 victory, thanks to a strong defensive effort throughout. Portales held Moriarty to just four points in the third quarter, thus advancing the Rams to Saturday's d...

  • God's economy puts rich, poor on equal footing

    Curtis Shelburne|Updated Feb 22, 2018

Wealth. How varied and strange are the uses of that word. More often than not, when we use the word “wealth,” we’re talking about money, a necessary commodity, for sure. But measuring wealth is not as easy as it might seem. A boatload of financial wealth, if allowed to possess us, may amount to less than a nanoparticle of the wealth that matters, the sort that frees us. (Oh, and this is tricky. A grasping, greedy soul can be throttled by much or by little.) Surely you don’t...

  • Some perks have to be paid for

    Audra Brown|Updated Feb 22, 2018

On the movies, the kids dream of ponies and cars and money and being left alone. I found out, in those rare times that I spent a concentrated amount of time with people my own age — those mysterious humans that lived further than just down the road — that real kids are often similar. It can be a luxury, to have a little extra spending money to buy some things that you don’t need. But the important thing, which is left out of all those wishes on TV, is you don’t get it for fre...

  • We can be joyful in any circumstance

    Judy Brandon|Updated Feb 22, 2018

Susie, my sister, was recently visiting a patient at a major medical center. As she turned the corner in the hospital hall, she came directly in contact with a young girl, her mother, and another who Susie assumed was the little girl’s grandmother. All three were walking together. My sister was immediately drawn to the child. Ashley was a beautiful, curly headed little girl about the age of Susie’s own 8-year-old granddaughter. However, there was a noticeable difference. The...

His recovery might be a while, up to a year, wrote his court-appointed public defender Jeremiah Hall in a motion filed Wednesday to quash the bench warrant on which Flores was arrested Feb. 1 in Clovis. “Mr. Flores requires six to eight weeks of healing tim...
