  • Editorial: Legislators shouldn't change Constitution to avoid tough choices

Here's a new motto the New Mexico Legislature is trying on for size: When the going gets tough, the not-so-tough dump it on the state Constitution. How else to explain Senate Joint Resolution 2 (and House Joint Resolution 7), which would ask voters to approve a constitutional amendment limiting public school class sizes? It's because the Legislature has not been able to either statutorily reject/amend the administrative code that limits class sizes or refuse to allow class-size waivers. Instead, lawmakers have approved a...

  • GOP blocks Hagel vote

    RICHARD LARDNER The Associated Press

WASHINGTON — Senate Republicans on Thursday blocked the nomination of former GOP senator Chuck Hagel as the nation's next defense secretary over unrelated questions about President Barack Obama's actions in the aftermath of the deadly raid on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Libya. Obama accused Republicans of playing politics with national security during wartime, and Democrats vowed to revive the nomination after Congress' weeklong break. By 58-40, with one abstention, the Senate fell short of the 60-vote threshold r...

  • My Turn - 'Warm Bodies' is no superhero movie

    Alisa Boswell

I watched the new zombie movie "Warm Bodies" last weekend. I will give the writers and directors props. It is definitely a very different twist on zombies with the story entailing them becoming more human rather than becoming more monster. It was an interesting and creative perspective to see it from. The movie had some enjoyable humor as well. However, the cheesiness factor for the movie is also very high with some scenes being just flat silly. But the few cheesy moments in the movie do not take away from the interesting... Full story

  • Those who sow tears of love shall reap joy

    Joan Clayton

Many biblical characters cried tears of love. Joseph wept loudly before he made himself known to his brothers. (Genesis 45:1-3) In Psalm 18:6, David said, "But in my distress I cried out to the LORD; yes, I prayed to my God for help. He heard me from the sanctuary, my cry to him reached his ears." Think of the tears Mary had as she looked at her son on the cruel cross. I'm sure her sacrifice was terribly painful, but I'm also sure she knew it had to be to save mankind for those who believed. Jesus wept, too. He came to earth...

  • Rights don't change, even if details do

    Kent McManigal CMI columnist

Recently a lot of anti-liberty advocates have tried to justify their opposition to the Second Amendment. They say it is "outdated;" that back when the Bill of Rights was written, the founders couldn't have foreseen semi-automatic rifles. That may or may not be true, but even then advances were being made, and these men weren't stupid. You can't convince me that scientists such as Benjamin Franklin or Thomas Jefferson weren't smart enough to see where the technology was leading. But let's pretend for just a moment that the...
