  • AP source: Body found in rubble of burned cabin

    The Associated Press

BIG BEAR, Calif. — The extraordinary manhunt for the former Los Angeles police officer suspected of three murders converged Tuesday on a mountain cabin where he was believed to have barricaded himself inside, engaged in a shootout that killed a deputy and then never emerged as the home went up in flames. A single gunshot was heard from within, and a charred body was found inside. If the man inside proves to be Christopher Dorner, the search for the most wanted man in A... Full story

  • Owners should pony up cost of horse testing

New Mexico's racino and horse racing industries are hitched at the hip. The racinos need the races to have slots, and the horsemen need a place to run their ponies for prize money. New Mexico's purse money averages about $45 million annually, and that can entice owners and trainers to race horses that are injured, doped up or too young. And 2012 was a poster year for doping horses in New Mexico. Four trainers were sanctioned after a rash of horses tested positive for doping drugs in late May during qualifying races for the... Full story

  • Group pushes for 'veteran' definition change

    Tom Philpott

Lt. Cmdr. Jack Townsend, a Navy Reserve retiree in Richmond, Va., first became aware a decade ago that he wasn't considered a military "veteran" under federal law. It's been bothering him ever since. Townsend was applying for a job when asked for a copy of his DD Form 214, "Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty," to prove veteran status. Townsend, who had earned his reserve commission through the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, didn't have a DD 214 because he never had served under active duty orders. He did...

  • Letter to the editor: Food Bank staff thanks community for generosity

Members of the community packed a local restaurant Jan. 31 to raise funds for the Food Bank of Eastern New Mexico. After a night that included dinner, a live auction and individual donations, more than $2,600 was raised for the Food for Kids Weekend Backpack Program. The Backpack Program sends food home with students who may not have enough to eat over the weekend. The funds raised will be used to purchase food for the program, which distributes single-serve entrees, cereal, peanut butter, shelf-stable milk and fruit. The... Full story

  • My Turn - Hilliard has graced all with her dedication

The first time I saw Jane Mauk Hilliard, I literally thought she owned Portales. She looked so regal sitting in former Portales Mayor Orlando Ortega's classic vehicle during the Roosevelt County centennial photo retake on the courthouse square last June. I knew if I had to talk to someone that day, it was her, I wanted to know her story. When I approached her, she was so gentle and kind when speaking with me. I felt like she earned honorary grandma status just because of the warm spirit she gave off. I found out she helped...

  • It doesn't take a filibuster

    Kevin Wilson

Lucy promised; she swore. Don't worry, Charlie Brown, I'm not going to pull the football away from you. Not like all of the other times I've done it before. You and I only had to read a few strips to know Lucy was pulling that football away. Charlie Brown never figured it out. It's a little predictable and discouraging to find out Harry Reid's still in the Charlie Brown camp. The filibuster, which isn't in the Constitution, requires 60 votes to end Senate debate and move on to a vote. Lyndon Johnson was Senate Majority... Full story

  • Obama in State of the Union address: Nation stronger

    JULIE PACE The Associated Press

WASHINGTON — Uncompromising and politically emboldened, President Barack Obama urged a deeply divided Congress Tuesday night to embrace his plans to use government money to create jobs and strengthen the nation's middle class. He declared Republican ideas for reducing the deficit "even worse" than the unpalatable deals Washington had to stomach during his first term. In his first State of the Union address since winning re-election, Obama conceded economic revival is an "unfin...

  • Lady Rams go game up on Lovington

    CMI staff

LOVINGTON — It was anything but pretty, the kind of game the Portales Lady Rams have made a habit of winning over the years. Even this one, though, was stranger than usual. Portales took a stranglehold on the District 4-3A race Tuesday night with a 31-27 victory over Lovington in a game which saw the teams attempt 43 free throws and combine for only 13 field goals. Freshman guard Sheraya Cox made 1-of-2 free throws in the closing seconds to finally put it out of reach for the Lady Rams (17-7, 2-0 district). Cox finished with...

  • Rams' rally falls short

    CMI staff

LOVINGTON — After trailing virtually all the way, the Portales Rams nearly stole one from rival Lovington Tuesday night. The Wildcats survived a bit of a wild finish to claim a 56-55 win in District 4-3A play. Lovington opened a nine-point lead at the end of one quarter and led by 12 in the third stanza before the Rams rallied. "The first half we didn't run any offense, we didn't rebound and we dug ourselves a hole," Rams coach Rickie McBroom said. "We've got to start playing better at the beginning of games." It was the t...
