  • Analysis - Records: Police knew Flores was 'suicide threat'

    David Stevens|Updated Feb 8, 2018

CLOVIS - It's been almost a week since Wesley Flores somehow managed to bring a gun into the Curry County Adult Detention Center, briefly hold a hostage, keep law enforcement at bay for four hours, and ultimately shoot himself in the face. At last report, he remained in critical condition in a Lubbock hospital. The obvious question - How did Flores get the gun into the facility? - remains a mystery because investigators have declined to answer that question. But through... Full story

  • Historic bricks moving only temporarily

    David Grieder|Updated Feb 8, 2018

CLOVIS — How do you go about digging under an historic street made of century-old bricks? Carefully, that's how. Those who may have noticed a stack of bricks next to a short trench at the intersection of Fifth and Main streets need not fret for the stones of Clovis' storied old thoroughfare, officials say. It's part of necessary upgrades and in another week the road should be back as it was. "This is just an extension of what we're calling the Fifth Street Project," said M...

  • Reporter's notebook: Gifts of love

    David Grieder|Updated Feb 8, 2018

Romance means different things to different people, and folks show their love in different ways. But on Valentine’s Day the common and practically requisite expression seems to be flowers, chocolate and teddies. It may go without saying, but the Feb. 14 holiday is “one of the busiest days of the years” for florists, rivaled only by Mother’s Day, said local florist Sela Portillo. And unlike a non-perishable stuffed animal, flowers generally only stay perfect for so long. Ah, what a thing is love. “We do have a lot of custom...
