  • Country could use more of the Gorsuch approach

    Albuquerque Journal|Updated Feb 9, 2017

Another day, another administration and Senate, another partisan fight that catches a highly qualified Supreme Court candidate in the crosshairs. Democrats complain with some justification that Republicans should have taken up the nomination of well-qualified Merrick Garland late in President Obama’s term. But the Democrat and liberal reaction to President Trump’s nomination of Judge Neil Gorsuch of the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals, claiming that he’s “dangerous,” “extreme” and “outside the mainstream,” borders on farce....

  • Federal swamp needs draining now

    Rube Render|Updated Feb 9, 2017

In 1951, President Harry Truman fired Gen. Douglas MacArthur for insubordination. Thirty years later, when 11,000 air traffic controllers ignored his order to return to work, President Ronald Reagan fired them. This year, when acting Attorney General Sally Yates refused to do her job, President Donald Trump fired her. Individual federal workers have always had disagreements with their elected employers, and have resigned or left when the differences could not be resolved....

  • Everyone deserves freedom to speak

    Kent McManigal|Updated Feb 9, 2017

On many college campuses, the students and faculty are so opposed to hearing anything other than leftist, “social justice” speakers, that they’ll threaten violence to keep other speakers away. While the freedom to speak doesn’t obligate anyone to listen, nor to provide a platform, you have no right to prevent others from listening to ideas you hate. An echo chamber is a poor substitute for education. Sure, as long as a school doesn’t accept one cent of tax money, it is privat...

  • Lady Cats turn back Manzano 48-36

the Staff of The News|Updated Feb 8, 2017

CLOVIS — Playing without arguably their two best ballhandlers, Clovis High’s girls were a bit vulnerable against a young but scrappy Manzano squad in Tuesday’s District 2-6A matchup at Rock Staubus Gym. It didn’t show early, though, as the Lady Wildcats opened a 17-point halftime lead. The Monarchs made a charge late, but Clovis finished off a 48-36 win that helps keep their Class 6A state tournament hopes alive. Junior guard Sydni Hill was lost for the season on Monday when she broke her hand in practice, CHS coach Jeff Reed...

  • ENMU men hold off Mustangs 83-77

the Staff of The News|Updated Feb 8, 2017

PORTALES — Western New Mexico came into Tuesday’s Lone Star Conference men's game with only two wins for the season, including none in league play. Meantime, Eastern New Mexico University played well in two road games last week, earning a split, and is fighting for a spot in the LSC postseason tournament. The Mustangs gave the Greyhounds all they could handle, though, before ENMU finally got control of the contest late for an 83-77 victory at Greyhound Arena. After the WNMU women, also winless in LSC games and saddled wit...

  • ENMU women hold off Western New Mexico

The Staff of The News|Updated Feb 8, 2017

PORTALES — Western New Mexico almost pulled off the upset in the year in Lone Star Conference women’s play, if not in Division II overall. But the LSC-leading Greyhounds did just enough to hold the struggling Mustangs off, surviving at the free-throw line in a 76-71 victory Tuesday night at Greyhound Arena. Johna McClelland scored 15 to lead three in double figures for the Greyhounds (17-5, 13-2 LSC), who seemed on easy street to a school-record 13th conference win after Brandi Gomez’ jumper made it 68-53 with 6:31 to go. B...

  • Clovis boys edge Manzano in overtime

The Staff of The News|Updated Feb 8, 2017

ALBUQUERQUE — The Clovis Wildcats know they escaped Manzano with a win Tuesday night thanks to luck. But they also left knowing they created some of that luck with hard work. Taitt Kuchta missed a contested jumper in the final seconds of overtime, but Leroy Wilson knocked a defensive rebound from Eric Sonnenberg that landed right into Brandon Romero’s hands for a point-blank shot as time expired for a 70-69 win over the Monarchs. Romero and Jakeem Wynn, who fouled out earlier in the extra session, both scored 24 to lead the...

  • Pintos hold off Portales girls

    David Norton|Updated Feb 8, 2017

PORTALES - Slow starts to begin each half spelled bad news for the Portales girls basketball team on Tuesday night, with the Lady Rams falling to Moriarty 38-30 in a District 4-4A game at the Ram Athletic Center. While Portales played solidly on the defensive end for the most part, the Lady Rams (13-8, 2-2 district) struggled to put the ball in the basket on offense. "We didn't convert some easy things inside, like we normally do, and free throws," Lady Rams coach Wade Fraze...

PORTALES — Roosevelt County commissioners work fast. That’s what accountant Ray Roberts told them at their Tuesday morning commission meeting. “I’ve been doing this for 30 years; I have never had anybody clean up 11 audit findings in one year, and that’s just a tremendous accomplishment,” Roberts told commissioners as he praised County Manager Amber Hamilton and other officials. During her report to commissioners, Hamilton said their packet included a quarterly report on county finances. “Our county’s financial perfo...
