    LUBBOCK — Senior Isaiah Samoei and sophomore Kaspars Briska went 3-5 in the men's 3,000-meter run in Texas Tech's season-openng Red Raider Open track meet, ENMU's first indoor track competition since the school moved up from the NAIA to NCAA Division II in 1984. Samoei ran the event in a time of 8 minutes, 40.61 seconds while Briska finished in 8:41.11. Junior Kevin Roa was 12th in the event for the Greyhounds in 8:58.20.     Robert Garcia is one of three Eastern New Mexico University students to make history in the Department of Theater by co-directing the first student-directed production to hit the Main Stage Theater.     Mark Gromley says the controversy surrounding the Boy Scouts of America and its policy regarding the ban on gay members strays away from what the organization is about. Gromley, president of the area's Boy Scouts of America Conquistador Council, associates the scouts with leadership, camping and merit badges, not the sexual orientation of the parents involved.     Eastern New Mexico University has another record enrollment. A university news release reports 5,222 students enrolled for the spring semester. "This is an increase of 2.7 percent over last year's spring record of 5,084," the release stated. The release also said student credit hours — the measurement by which higher education institutions base funding — increased by 2.6 percent, to 52,373.     The paintings of pioneer Taos artists are on exhibit at the Eula Mae Edwards Museum and Gallery at Clovis Community College. The exhibit showcases work from some of the earliest Taos artists, including Bert Geer Phillip, Ernest L. Blumenschein and Joseph Henry Sharp. The artists with works on display are deceased.     Clovis Fire Department officials are continuing to investigate the cause of a Friday afternoon duplex fire in the 800 block of Hinkle Street. No injuries were reported, but Capt. Allan Silvers said the duplex where the fire started was heavily damaged. The back door to the burned duplex was open when firefighters arrived about 4:30 p.m., Silvers said, but the resident was not home.     AUSTIN, Texas — The system Texas uses to fund public schools violates the state's constitution by not providing enough money to school districts and failing to distribute the money in a fair way, a judge ruled Monday. The landmark decision could force the Legislature to overhaul the way it pays for education.   • Bus driver reports Tucumcari student with gun

    New Mexico State Police are investigating an incident involving a teenager accused of possessing a firearm at Tucumcari Middle School. On Jan. 29, a bus driver who had completed his route reported to a school secretary that a student was carrying a gun in a backpack, said Aaron McKinney, Tucumcari's school superintendent. It wasn't immediately clear how the unidentified driver knew the teen had a gun. McKinney said he contacted the state police immediately and informed them of the incident.
