CLOVIS — The man involved in Thursday’s standoff at the Curry County Jail pulled a gun from his clothing as he waited to be booked following his arrest, Curry County Sheriff Wesley Waller said. Wesley Flores, 28, of Clovis, was in stable condition at a Lubbock hospital Friday after police said he shot himself in the face at the end of the four-hour standoff. Waller said Clovis police arrested Flores on Thursday afternoon after he failed to appear in court on a warrant alleging possession of a firearm by a felon, multiple una...

  • Hounds protect home court, top Texans

    Updated Feb 2, 2018

PORTALES - Protect this court. That was the message that Eastern New Mexico coach Tres Segler delivered to his Greyhound men's basketball team prior to Thursday night's game against Tarleton State. ENMU clearly rose to the occasion, responding with a 61-57 win to snap a two-game losing streak. "I thought our guys did a really good job. It was a defensive battle all night long. Tarleton, their zone, they do a really great job," ENMU coach Tres Segler said. "I think we moved...

  • Forgiveness is not optional

    Curtis Shelburne|Updated Feb 2, 2018

The Apostle Peter once came to Jesus with a question: “Lord, how often do I have to forgive?” (Matthew 18:21). “Lord,” he seems to be saying, “I’m a reasonable man. I want to do the right thing. If my brother or sister keeps sinning against me, how many times do I let it go by? Maybe, say, seven times?” It seemed reasonable. It seemed fair to Peter. To be honest, it seems fair to most of us. But you know how Jesus answered: “No, not seven times, but seventy times seven.” J...

  • Where's that spork when I need one?

    Audra Brown|Updated Feb 2, 2018

Utensils are easy to take for granted. The next time you find yourself a little lacking in that department due to a flimsy plastic piece of silverware, when a mutant recombination of utensil concepts has dropped your food, or when you just have to use what God gave you to get that porkchop into a bite-sized piece … be thankful for the food, and for the fact that you’ve got something that at least was intended to help you eat. What I wouldn’t have given for a spork — but cer...

  • Lasting happiness follows contentment

    Judy Brandon|Updated Feb 2, 2018

Are we a happy people? Some studies indicate that less than half of all Americans consider themselves happy. A Harris Poll was taken in 2017 and only 33 percent of the Americans surveyed said they were happy. In 2016, just 31 percent of Americans reported the same. I read an interesting article in the New York Times that addresses this issue of people wanting to be happy. A New York Times article reported that on Jan. 12, several days after registration opened at Yale Universi...

  • Eastern women prevail

    Eric Murray|Updated Feb 1, 2018

PORTALES — Alivia Lewis' clutch performance in the final minute of Thursday's Lone Star Conference women's basketball matchup against Tarleton State was enough to lift her Greyhounds to victory. And ENMU, as a result of Lewis' effort, has now won nine of its last 12 games. "Yeah, she stepped up and made big plays — I was really proud of her," Eastern head coach Josh Prock said of the 6-foot-2 freshman from Albuquerque. "She made big free throws, big rebounds. She's a good pla...

  • Science class makes foray into recycling

    Eamon Scarbrough|Updated Feb 1, 2018

PORTALES — What separates the world we live in now from the gray, dystopian locales of our films and literature? It could be as little as a few trips to the recycling center each month, according to a Portales High School science class. Standing by a large receptacle full of plastic and other recyclables she and her peers in her honors science class donated, sophomore Paige Gard, 15, said Thursday afternoon that after watching documentaries about rampant pollution, she i...

PORTALES — Last season, the Eastern New Mexico University softball team escaped the Lone Star Conference cellar. This year? The Greyhounds want a seat at the tournament table, and third-year head coach Katie Welborn is confident that can happen. “There’s not a player on our team that isn’t better than what they were last year,” Welborn said. “We’re where we’re supposed to be. We’ve brought in new players with new talent, and we’ve elevated.” The Greyhounds start their season Friday in the three-day Desert Stinger Tournament i...

CLOVIS — About 10 people gathered at the Clovis/Curry County Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday night as the United Way of Eastern New Mexico continued its series of “community conversations.” The goal of the events is to find out what issues are most important to people in Curry and Roosevelt counties. “We don’t have a certain thing we’re looking for in terms of topics or ideas that we hope to hear; really it’s just been exciting to hear all the different things that are important to people and how they imagine different thi...
