  • Selfishness not necessarily evil act

    Kent McManigal Local columnist

One of the self-evident tenets of libertarianism is that of self-ownership. You own your life, and the products of your life. If you didn't own yourself, you couldn't give your life to someone else since it wouldn't be yours to give. That has implications in every aspect of life, from the interpersonal to the religious. Just as no one else can claim to own your life, no one else has any claim on the products of your life without your explicit agreement. Being born in a place, and choosing to not leave, is not an explicit...

  • Their view: Cold weather can be dangerous to four-legged family members

Mallory Kerley, media coordinator for the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, offers tips for pet owners in cold weather: The temperature is falling to frigid levels across the country, and the ASPCA is reminding pet owners that the cold weather can also be dangerous for our four-legged family members. Below are some safety tips to keep in mind as the temperature drops: z "It is important to always walk your dog on a leash, but when it snows this becomes critical," says Dr. Louise Murray, vice...

  • Legislation expands Medicaid

    Christina Calloway PNT senior writer

Roosevelt General Hospital CEO Larry Leaming says there's a lot of uncertainty of what's to come from the Affordable Care Act. What Leaming and other providers see as such a nebulous piece of legislation has them concerned about the effects it will have, but Leaming says one thing's for sure, it will not change who they serve. "We're not turning anyone away from care and that won't change," Leaming said. "We'll fight to maintain quality of care. We don't belong to anyone other than the people of Roosevelt County. They're our... Full story

  • Zias hope to prove LSC poll wrong

Eastern New Mexico University softball coach Lauren Sigwing isn't that surprised her team was picked for last place this season in the 10-team Lone Star Conference. That said, she'll be disappointed if the Zias actually finish 10th. "We've got a good team," said Sigwing, beginning her fourth season at ENMU. "We're still young, but (with a number of players) having a year of experience, there's a huge difference. I can see it in practice and I can see it in the leadership." The Zias (15-34, 7-20 LSC last year) open their... Full story

  • My Turn - Nostalgic singing brings excitement

    Alisa Boswell

I'm not entirely sure what has spurred on this recent blast from the past in me and co-worker Christina Calloway. But the entire week has been spent jamming to 1990s boy bands as we type at our computers. Strangely enough, this was music I had no interest in at the height of its popularity, when I was in middle school. When you become an adult, suddenly you become excited about things not because they are good, but because you associate them with your childhood. Sometimes the simplest way of having fun is creating a nostalgic...

  • Gray fox beneficial to area

A few nights ago my neighbor said that a dog just cleared his five-foot high backyard fence slicker than a whistle. I said, "Hate to say this, but that may not have been a dog." I asked him if the animal had a dark-tipped tail, and he said he thought it did. My comment was, "That was likely a gray fox." In fact, I commented that they jump about four feet straight up in the air from a standing position. He was amazed. Larry Brock: Courtesy photo Gray Fox. A week later, another...

  • Thank God for all creatures

    Joan Clayton

"Oh Mommy, can we keep him? He can be our Valentine!" I thought to myself, this kitten is only going to be here temporarily. Tom stayed "temporarily" for 15 years. He thought of himself as a special member of the family, and he turned out to be just that. The boys constantly invented new ways to tease and aggravate Tom including paper boots, cardboard boxes with little peep holes, and endless hours with long strings of yarn. Needless to say, their teasing made quite a fighter out of Old Tom. He held his own anywhere. He daily...

  • ENMU Gay Straight Alliance challenges legislation

    Christina Calloway PNT senior writer

Anne Jezek wants to know how two people loving each other affects Republican state Sen. Pat Woods, who has introduced legislation defining marriage as being between one man and one woman. Jezek joined ENMU Gay Straight Alliance president and student Robert Johnston Thursday in drafting a letter to Woods. As an advocate and ally of the gay community, Jezek wrote an impassioned letter to Woods on Facebook making it clear she's one member of this community who does not believe how he does. "Everyone should have equal rights,"... Full story

  • GOP seeks NM tax system overhaul

    BARRY MASSEY The Associated Press

SANTA FE — Republican lawmakers proposed Thursday to significantly revamp New Mexico's governmental finance system by relying more on taxing people and businesses on what they consume and spend rather than the income they earn. Rep. Tom Taylor and Sen. Bill Sharer, both of Farmington, outlined their proposal Thursday but conceded it's a work-in-progress and not fully clear how the tax burdens of individuals and businesses will change. "It may overtax some areas and we need to understand all of that before we cast this t...

  • Public opinion more powerful than regulation

The influence of public opinion can be greater than any government mandate. That must be the message delivered the other day by PepsiCo Inc., the maker of Gatorade, the most popular sports drink in the nation. PepsiCo received complaints about brominated vegetable oil it had used in the energy drink. The gripes came from customers who didn't like the additive, which also has been patented — get this — as a flame retardant. PepsiCo's reaction to its customers was reasonable and prudent. It listened, then decided to eli...
