President Barack Obama began his second term Monday with a speech that recalled the words of the Founders and civil rights pioneers to challenge the American people to come together today to realize the dreams of earlier generations. The newly elected president hit an appropriately high tone for an inaugural address on the steps of the U.S. Capitol. It had lines inspired by Thomas Jefferson, Martin Luther King Jr. and John F. Kennedy. A common theme was the idea that "We, the people" are united in a noble cause to build a... Full story

Two Curry County school superintendents said they are withholding full acceptance of Gov. Susana Martinez's announcement Thursday that the statewide graduation rate for the class of 2012 was 70.3 percent, which would be an increase of 7.3 points from last year's graduation rate. In a news release, the Governor's office said all student groups increased their graduation rates with the largest increases occurring among minority students. While applauding the graduation rate improvement, Martinez urged the passage of proposed... Full story
A moment of bonding between Charlie Crane and a group of international students from Eastern New Mexico University during a storm was the birth of the First Baptist Church international student ministry. A severe thunderstorm blew in as Crane and 13 ENMU students tried to set up camp at Ute Lake after a boating trip 20 years ago. Crane said he and the students became close that night and the ENMU international student's club sort of adopted him. Over the years the ministry has allowed Crane and his wife Martha to share the...
Ninth Judicial District Attorney Matthew Chandler said he plans to retry accused killer Arnoldo Navarette, 42, after the New Mexico Supreme Court overturned the original conviction in a 1993 Portales murder case. The state's highest court issued it's decision Jan. 17, saying Navarette wasn't allowed to confront a witness at trial. Navarette was found guilty of first degree murder and aggravated battery with a deadly weapon at trial in September 2010, accused of the shooting death of Portales resident Reynaldo Ornelas on May...
Being on the road so much recently and having my entire being consumed by energy has left me with little else to talk or write about lately. It's been an exciting two weeks for me with a lot of traveling and site seeing. With my new adventure of delving into the energy industry, I've been to a few windfarms in the last week, standing directly under wind turbines and even going inside of one for the first time. I've seen a lot of new things and received a lot of new education in the last few weeks and it's been, well, fun. My...

I can almost hear our founding fathers echo this call: "America, Return to God!" Does America need prayer? Look around. Television is filled with violence of every sort. Morals have gone. Sin seems to be accepted everywhere. Planet earth is experiencing unprecedented challenges. We have made great strides in technology, but so has our enemies. Now, more than ever, we need wisdom, guidance, direction and most of all prayers. It has been said that, "Everybody either has a problem, lives with a problem, or is a problem." Life...

Conservative columnist Michelle Malkin says federal Common Core practices don't add up to success. Here are snippets from a recent column: America's downfall doesn't begin with the "low-information voter." It starts with the no-knowledge student. For decades, collectivist agitators in our schools have chipped away at academic excellence in the name of fairness, diversity and social justice. "Progressive" reformers denounced Western civilization requirements, the Founding Fathers and the Great Books as racist. They attacked...
