  • Airmen uneasy over budget talk

    Tom Philpott Military Update

Unbending politicians who hold defense budgets hostage while refusing to cut a deal to address the nation's debt crisis are putting at risk the readiness of America's armed forces. That's what the Joint Chiefs warned last week in a letter to the House and Senate armed services committees. "We are on the brink of creating a hollow force due to an unprecedented convergence of budget conditions and legislation that could require (keeping) more forces than requested while underfunding (their) readiness," the seven members of the... Full story

  • Clovis topples Lady Rams

    Dave Wagner CMi sports writer

Portales girls coach Clay Stout knew he was taking a calculated risk, playing a box-and-one defense against Clovis High sophomore Danni Williams. The Lady Rams made it tough on Williams and, for a long time, the Lady Wildcats. But a 3-pointer by senior guard Miranda Loera opened a seven-point margin at the half, and Clovis pulled away to a 58-41 victory on Tuesday night at the Ram Athletic Center. Portales (11-6), ranked fifth in Class 3A, held Williams to 14 points, about six under her average, but guards Brandi Gomez and Ni...

  • Authorities: Teen planned more attacks

SUSAN MONTOYA BRYAN The Associated Press

ALBUQUERQUE — The New Mexico teenager accused of gunning down five family members over the weekend ambushed his father as he returned home from an overnight shift at a rescue mission, then reloaded his rifles and planned to go to a Wal-Mart and randomly shoot people, authorities said Tuesday. Instead, 15-year-old Nehemiah Griego texted a picture of his dead mother to his 12-year-old girlfriend, then spent much of Saturday with the girl and her family, authorities said. That evening, he went to the church where Griego's f... Full story

  • Campus guns discussed

    Christina Calloway PNT senior writer

Guns on a school campus once seemed like the unimaginable, but now seems more common after Tuesday's melee at a Houston campus, which involved a shooting that injured three. Tuesday's incident and other recent school shootings as well as gun control were topics of discussion for Eastern New Mexico University students as they wondered about a possible active shooter situation on their own campus. "It's not the gun actually killing the people, it's the mental condition of the people holding the guns" said Bryan Harris, a freshm... Full story

  • Sandy Hook conspiracy claims 'spectacularly stupid'

    Kevin Wilson

I know some stupid people. I know some Sandy Hook conspiracy theorists. But I repeat myself. A Google search would indicate growing claims there was no shooting in Newtown, Conn., and the interviews and funerals were performed by "crisis actors" the government hired ... all to rally support for gun control. Regarding such claims, Daily Kos blogger Michael Lazzaro penned Saturday, "It's important to remember that for the most part these people were already spectacularly stupid consipracy theorists before the Sandy Hook...

  • My Turn - Live like tomorrow's not promised

I'm sure we all remember how good we had it when we were kids. I love how blind we were to the world's issues as we played with others, not having a care in the world. Fast forward to my 24th birthday, which I celebrated Monday, and I feel the world's problems are on my shoulders. Getting older is scary. Getting older could be sad. But getting older happens. I'm aware 24 is still relatively young, but I have certain goals I'm reaching for that I'm working pretty hard to get to within time constraints. But you can't put a...

  • Their View: Americans should shun trash-talking Asian stars

Conservative political writer Michelle Malkin says anti-American Asians don't speak for her. Snippets from a recent column: Martial arts movie legend Jackie Chan deserves a rhetorical roundhouse kick to the mouth. So does his pal PSY, the Korean rapper whose "Gangnam Style" music video has racked up more than a billion views. Both have raked in big bucks from Western fans while trashing the very freedoms and cultures that made them superstars. Earlier this month, The Washington Post spotlighted an interview Chan did with...

  • Veterans pilot program good investment

Among several bills in the New Mexico legislative hopper is one that would fund a pilot program to help New Mexico veterans who have post-traumatic stress disorder. After more than a decade of war and as the U.S. presence in Afghanistan starts to wind down, hundreds if not thousands of veterans are returning home with wounds, both physical and mental. House Bill 36, introduced by state Rep. Dianne Hamilton, a Silver City Republican, seeks to appropriate $250,000 from the general fund for the Veterans' Services Department to...
