  • Sometimes animal science is a gas

    Sharna Johnson|Updated Jan 17, 2017

Sometimes preceded by sound, other times completely unannounced, nothing interrupts a quiet evening in front of the television quite like a wafting contribution from the family dog — or for that matter a good night of sleep after the pooch gets into something digestively delightful that reemerges hours later as a cloud above the bed. Anyone who spends time around critters is well aware that not only do they pass gas with careless abandon, they aren’t concerned about it in the...

  • Hoping caution prevails over vengeance with ACA

    Steve Hansen|Updated Jan 17, 2017

I have two words of advice for the Republican Congress as it gets ready to perform major surgery on Obamacare: Go slow. Obamacare itself was passed so quickly that even its Democrat sponsors weren’t able to tell you exactly what was in it. The result seems to have been a well-meant but deeply flawed attempt to spread health insurance to everyone and get a handle on reducing at least the soaring rate of inflation in our health care costs. So far Obamacare seems to have achieved neither goal, even though the Democrats, in my o...

    Kurt Munz-Raper|Updated Jan 17, 2017

CLOVIS — The walking was one of the things that 8-year-old Olivia Romero looked forward to as a first-time participant in the Clovis Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commission Symbolic Walk and Rally. But she said it was important she participate for another reason. "He wanted the black people and the white people to not fight," Romero said. The theme of unity and peace carried on for speakers and participants during the 25th annual walk, which began at Potter Park and ended at L...

Roanhaus retirement marks end of era When an era ends that was part of my life, I have sentimental thoughts that cause me to reflect for days or weeks. Coach Eric Roanhaus’ recent resignation as Clovis High football coach was one such occasion. In 1972, I was hired to be a ninth-grade football coach at Marshall Junior High. I learned I would be working with newly hired coach Dunny Goode. I soon realized I was fortunate to be working with an experienced, knowledgeable, veteran Texas football coach who had been baptized in fire... Full story
