  • It's tough being mechanically challenged

Some of us have difficulty dealing with mechanical objects. I guess the politically correct way to state our problem is “mechanically challenged.” That goes double for computers. There’s a little man in mine -- I’ve named him Elmer. Every now and then he says, “You’ve been doing really good. I think I’ll just mess you up now."... Full story

  • Market more powerful than big oil

It seems like yesterday mobs clamored for government to spank Big Oil for gouging. “Windfall profit taxes!” they demanded as gasoline prices in June rose to $4.33 nationally. What a difference a season makes. Gasoline prices now are around a buck and half in some parts of the nation and $2.40 on average for New Mexico, according to AAA auto club. Unsurprisingly, price relief came without Washington’s intercession. It was almost otherwise. When gasoline prices topped $4 a gallon, Senate Democrats last summer wanted the feder... Full story

  • Prosecutors want trial moved

    Sharna Johnson

Prosecutors want the trial of a Clovis man charged with more than 100 counts of child molestation moved to Portales because of publicity, according to court records. A motion filed in the 9th Judicial District Court on Thursday cites prejudicial news coverage and statements made by the defendant’s brother — who is the Tucumcari police chief and former Curry County sheriff — as examples why they believe a fair trial could not be held in Clovis. Larry Hatcher, 48, f...

  • Panelists discuss issue of race in election

    PNT Staff

Questions about race and its implications continue to be of interest since — or because of — the 2008 presidential election. The election marks a historic time as Barack Obama became the first black man to become president of the United States. Panelists at a forum Thursday at Eastern New Mexico University found much to discuss, so much, in fact, that the forum went on for twice as long as it was scheduled and did not address all of the questions listed. The forum, organized by ENMU’s African-American Affairs, i...

  • Some precious lessons from some precious little ones

    Curtis Shelburne

“Grandchildren,” someone has written, “are balm for grandparents’ souls.” Though I joined the lofty ranks of “grandparenthood” less than two years ago, it took me only a few nanoseconds with the two most beautiful little girls in the world to feel that truth. If my heart is soaring already, just a glimpse of them lifts it a thousand feet higher; if my heart is hurting, I take one look at them and feel the Lord using those little souls to bring healing to mine. The moment each...

  • Prayer and trust are vital to the believer

    Joan Clayton

Joan Clayton: Religion Columnist I can’t help but notice that a crisis brings prayer regardless of the catastrophe, and it happens in public places. I heard no complaints about praying in public when 9/11 happened. The pain was too deep. I think prayer is vital to us any time. In the tumultuous times of adversity, prayer and trusting are especially important. Mankind cannot save itself. Man is only a mortal being, but with God, “all things are possible” (Matthew 19:26). I am thankful for those who pray for others. In the m... Full story

The policy also allows for the student and the student’s parents to challenge a grade they believe...

  • Farmers, dairymen see slight negative impacts in plant closure

    Argen Duncan

The temporary closure of Abengoa Bioenergy in Portales has resulted in small but unfavorable changes for the Roosevelt County agriculture sector. The ethanol plant shut down operations for an unspecified period of time, possibly months, in October. Abengoa used milo, which many county farmers grow, to make ethanol. Some dairy owners used the byproduct “wet cake,” also called distillers’ grains, as part of their cattle’s rations. “It’s probably hurt the price of milo a little bit,” said Ben Buie, manager of grain trading...

  • Joy from material items short-lived

    Judy Brandon

When Daddy and Mother were in seminary, the money was tight. So we looked for entertainment that was inexpensive and accessible. I remember a trip when our family and another family took a trip to the Missouri State Fair in 1955. The Missouri State Fair was quite an attraction to us with all the farm animals and competitions. Yet, it was the midway was a primary enticement for us. Even though the carnival part was exciting, it was not the rides that caught my attention that...

Born in the active imagination of a shy teen hoping to contribute to his church’s newsletter, Amos the Churchmouse has wiggled his way into the hearts and minds of thousands of readers for more than four decades. A staple on the Clovis News Journal’s religion page since 1989, Amos champions Christianity by exploring the underpinnings of the church world. Creator Gary Mit... Full story

OKLAHOMA CITY--God bless America, and how’s everybody? • Sarah Palin was flooded by offers from Beverly Hills talent agents Monday. She is the only stock that’s going up. We knew Barack Obama was smart, if only we had known that when he said millions of Americans cling to God and guns, it was a stock tip. • New York Mets legend Mike Piazza signed a deal with Simon and Schuster Thursday to write his autobiography. He was some role model. Mike Piazza made the position of catcher so glamorous that today every oth... Full story
