  • ENMU women stay perfect in LSC race

    David Norton|Updated Jan 14, 2017

PORTALES — Brandi Gomez knows that teams fighting each other tend to lose. Instead, Eastern New Mexico University's women fought together and just kept on winning. Behind a career-high 20 points from the Clovis native, the Greyhounds rallied from a double-digit deficit in the second half and used a 13-2 fourth-quarter run to race past Cameron 84-76 for the second 7-0 Lone Star Conference start in program history. Kassandra Harris was one of five double-figure scorers with 1...

  • First, have faith in the Good Shepherd

    Judy Brandon|Updated Jan 13, 2017

Psalm 23 is one of the most loved Bible passages of all times. My mother thought the 23rd Psalm so important that she introduced my sister and me to that chapter at an early age. On those long rides through the Missouri hills when our family would commute to country churches where Daddy was to preach, Mother explained to us the 23rd Psalm. She painted a mental picture for us of Jesus the Good Shepherd looking after his sheep. All the while we were staring out the window at...

  • Some have 'the aroma of Christ'

    Curtis Shelburne|Updated Jan 13, 2017

In his delightful book “Jayber Crow,” author Wendell Berry has one character tell this little tale about another one: “Fraz Berlew was drunk and wandering. He wandered into a saloon down at Hargrave. The saloonkeeper was out and the place was empty. Fraz just helped himself to a considerable portion of the merchandise, and wandered on. “When he wandered back again the saloonkeeper was there. He said, ‘Fraz, did you come in here and drink up a bunch of my whiskey while I was go...

  • Art of punching cows: Part 1

    Audra Brown|Updated Jan 13, 2017

Let us look today at some of the flashier disciples of the hidden art of cow-punching known as kow-rate. These are the men and women who confront the livestock directly, they who truly punch the cows. Herd-animals must be maneuvered and convinced to go certain places at the behest of the cattle raisers they belong to, but you cannot ask a cow to go through a gate or walk down an alley. Rather, using the kow-rate method of one’s presence, they must be physically persuaded to m...

  • Aggies subdue Hounds

    Dave Wagner|Updated Jan 13, 2017

PORTALES — It took the Cameron Aggies a half to warm up on Thursday. Sophomore point guard J.V. Long scored just before halftime to give Cameron the lead and the Aggies never looked back, using a 31-15 run over 11 minutes early in the second stanza to post a 78-66 Lone Star Conference men's basketball victory over Eastern New Mexico University at Greyhound Arena. While the Aggies (11-6, 4-3 LSC) shot 59 percent in the second half on 16-of-27, the Greyhounds (7-9, 1-5) c...

  • Cats' upset bid against Hobbs falls short

The Staff of the News|Updated Jan 13, 2017

CLOVIS — Coming off a 30-point thumping at Hobbs on Saturday night, Clovis High's boys made sure things were different — a lot different, in fact — in Thursday's rematch at The Rock. Clovis led for virtually three quarters and stayed close throughout, but the Eagles made enough plays at the end to pull out a 67-63 victory over the Wildcats. CHS coach Scott Robinson said the Cats were relatively competitive at Hobbs except for one quarter. This time, they doggedly clung to a...
