Now, the man that has always had dreams of making something of himself has a chance to realize a lifelong goal — bring a title back to Clovis. Urquizo will fight in Austin, Texas, on July 28 for the vacant NABF Junior Cruiserweight world title against Kazakhstan’s Ali Baloyev. “I know this is...

PORTALES — Before a football team can celebrate state championships and all the glory that comes with them, it must first think about getting better everyday. On Thursday night, Portales hosted 7-on-7 scrimmages against Eunice, Lovington and Muleshoe. The round-robin scrimmages lasted 20 minutes apiece, with the first g...

    Eric Murray|Updated Jun 20, 2018

PORTALES — Standing at an imposing 7-foot-1 and 250 pounds, then-University of Arizona freshman center DeAndre Ayton sure looked the part of star to Eastern New Mexico men’s basketball onlookers, who had to face the highly-touted McDonald’s All-American in a preseason exhibition game last November in Tucson. In the Wildcats’ matchup against the Division II Greyhounds, Ayton had 31 points on 13-of-16 shooting and 10 rebounds in 24 minutes of a 91-63 win. Eric Murray|Updated May 13, 2018

ALBUQUERQUE — Bittersweet might be the word — and the feeling, to describe the weekend's Class 4A state meet for the Portales Ram track team. Hopes of a boys title quickly faded on the second day of the meet, while the promising relay teams didn't quite have the performances they needed. As a result, the Rams finished just out of trophy contention, scoring 46 points. Taos, with 81 points, edged out Silver (75) while St. Michael's took the green trophy with 54 points. And the...

ENMU (23-23, 7-17 LSC) swept UT-Permian Basin in a doubleheader Saturday to clinch an LSC Tournament berth. The Hounds will open today's tournament at West Texas A&M's W...

PORTALES — After sweeping No. 8 West Las Vegas in the Class 4A baseball tournament first round last weekend, Portales finds itself one step closer to a 4A title repeat. For Coach Dusty Nusser and company, this year's field should provide some interesting challenges. "Honestly, 1 through 8, anybody who gets to that third game (4A title game) is gonna be tough," Nusser said. "Most years, it's not always like that." According to Nusser, the remaining eight teams, including Portal...

    Eric Murray, Staff writer|Updated May 7, 2018

The four runs put the Rams (18-10) ahead for good, as they knocked-off the Dons (11-15), 7-3, to sweep the series. And with the victory, Portales will face No. 12 Santa Fe Indian n...

In Elida, coach Jarred Hestand is trying to make history, as the Tigers boys team has never won a state track title. Hestand led Hager...

The Portales boys track team is hoping to be that successful at the District 4-4A level. A team win at today's 4-4A meet at Greyhound Stadium would be not one, not two, not three, but four district titles in a row.
