    Dave Wagner CMI sports writer

Jake Cooper won Friday's first go-round in tie down roping in the 43rd annual Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association Pioneer Days Rodeo at Curry County Events Center, but he was less than satisfied. Cooper's time of 9.3 seconds was more than two seconds ahead of runnerup Cody Jordan of Hobbs, but he doesn't think it'll hold up in the final two days of the rodeo. New contestants will go at it tonight and again on Sunday. CMI photo: Tony Bullocks Kyle Broce of La Junta, Colo., received a no-score on his steer wrestling effort... Full story

  • ENMU names Prock women's basketball coach

    Dave Wagner CMI sports writer

Joshua Prock isn't intimidated by trying to build a women's basketball program at Eastern New Mexico University. He's already had success in what he called a similar situation at Division III Howard Payne University in Brownwood, Texas. "(Eastern is) a similar situation to where I'm at right now," said Prock, hired as the Zias' coach on Thursday. "I think if you work hard, positive things can happen. I'm more a glass-is-half-full guy than the glass-is half-empty-guy." Prock, 35, a 1996 Clovis High graduate, was one of eight c... Full story

  • ENMU closing in on filling coaching positions

    Dave Wagner CMI sports writer

Eastern New Mexico University is closing in on filling two head coaching positions. The school is looking to fill its women's basketball and softball positions after Lindsey Wilson and Lauren Sigwing resigned those posts, respectively, earlier this month. ENMU athletic director Jeff Geiser said Tuesday that the school received 43 applications for women's basketball, and had the list narrowed down to eight for telephone interviews on Tuesday and today. He said the school expects to invite from two to four finalists for...

    Dave Wagner CMI sports writer

Eastern New Mexico University sophomores Kaspars Briska and Alesha Jones have their work cut out in the NCAA Division II national outdoor track meet this weekend in Pueblo, Colo., but both are ready to give it their best shot. Briska, a junior college transfer from Riga, Latvia, qualified for the nationals in the 3,000 steeplechase, posting the 14th-best time in Division II at 9 minutes, 4.71 seconds in the Texas Relays on March 27. Jones, also a juco transfer from Wilcox, Ariz., is a senior academically but will have at...

  • Bloomfield eliminates Rams

    Dave Wagner CMI sports writer

In Game 3 of a high school playoff series, it sometimes comes down to the little things. The Portales Rams struggled much of the day, then positioned themselves to win the first-round Class 3A state series with a three-run sixth inning that tied the game and looked like it would turn into more. But a gamble backfired when Grant Wagner popped up an attempted suicide squeeze and Bloomfield first baseman Tyler Barker dove to catch the ball off the top of the grass, turning it into a double play at third base. The Bobcats...

  • Lady Cats seeking solid state showing

    Dave Wagner CMI sports writer

Clovis High girls golf coach Steve Speck is hoping his team can put it all together in Class 5A state competition, scheduled for Monday and Tuesday at UNM South in Albuquerque. The Lady Wildcats earned nine legs toward state competition — only three are needed — in 10 regular-season tournaments, and they go into Monday's event looking to improve on an eighth-place team finish from last year. • Portales uses big fourth to beat Clovis

    Dave Wagner CMI sports writer

With the wind blowing almost straight out, it took the Portales bats a while to get going on Saturday. Once they did, there wasn't much stopping them. The Lady Rams pounded out 14 hits — seven for extra bases — and used a six-run fourth to cruise to a 10-0 victory over Clovis at Lady Wildcat Field. Junior catcher Simone Laurenz drove in three runs with two of Portales' six doubles, while freshman Kiersten Ramirez tossed a two-hit shutout. Ramirez also started the damage in... Full story

  • Stadium could be retired

    Dave Wagner CMI sports writer

Greyhound Stadium, the longtime home of Eastern New Mexico University football located on Highway 70 at Blackwater Draw, may be about to be retired. The school has begun looking into prospects for building an on-campus, multipurpose facility which would serve for home events in football, soccer and track. The stadium would be on University Avenue, next to the Greyhounds' current football practice facility. ENMU president Steven Gamble said the wheels have been set in motion for the project which, if approved, would probably... Full story

    Dave Wagner CMI SPORTS WRITER

For three seasons, the Eastern New Mexico University football program pretty much knew what it would get from the quarterback position with Wes Wood. • Rams cruise in round-robin finale

    Dave Wagner CMI sports writer

After sweating out a pair of wins the previous night, the Portales Rams got to relax and enjoy one on Saturday. PHS combined nine hits with seven walks, three hit batsmen and six Tucumcari errors to roll to a 16-2 win over the Rattlers in the finale of a four-team, round-robin weekend event at Ram Field. The game was called after 4 1/2 innings because of the 10-run rule. "It was good for our kids," PHS coach Arturo Ontiveros said of the rout. "I was kind of exhausted from last night, so it was good to have a good win like... Full story

  • Zias win series with windy 16-14 victory

    Dave Wagner CMI sports writer

Eastern New Mexico University sophomore Albie Medina had an interesting day in Saturday's wind-blown Lone Star Conference game against Incarnate Word at Zia Softball Field. Medina delivered four hits — including three doubles up the right-center field alley — and drove in five runs as the designated player in the Zias' 16-14 win over the Cardinals. She also was in line for her LSC-leading fourth save until UIW made things interesting in the seventh with Victoria Silva's grand slam and Monica Acuna's solo shot — coming on co...

  • Purple reign: Elida wins 3rd straight title

    Dave Wagner CMI sports writer

ALBUQUERQUE — It may not seem like it, but the Elida girls basketball team feels as if it's had a large target on its collective back. Those things happen when you've won three state championships in a row. • Hounds heat up in second half

    Dave Wagner CMI sports writer

PORTALES —It didn't take long for Eastern New Mexico University's men to break open a tight game on Saturday. Junior guard Rodney Blackmon and freshman forward Lawrence Domingo scored 21 points each and junior guard Rodney Love posted his sixth double-double of the season with 20 points and 12 rebounds as the Greyhounds rode a six-minute, 16-0 run in the second half for an 86-70 Lone Star Conference win Incarnate Word at Greyhound Arena. It's the first time this season the Hou...

  • Zias earn LSC tournament bid despite loss

    Dave Wagner CMI sports writer

Incarnate Word couldn't find the range from 3-point distance for virtually the entire game Saturday. When the Cardinals desperately needed one, they got it on a fortunate bounce. Junior guard Katie Novak had her shot bounce high of the rim and fall through with 1:04 left in regulation — ending the team's 0-for-12 performance to that point — then senior guard Katy Cooke forced overtime by hitting a trey — on her second attempt of the possession — with 28 seconds to go. UIW got a three-point play from 6-foot-2 junior center...

  • Cats complete perfect district run

    Dave Wagner CMI sports writer

Kamal Cass has had a lot of big scoring games — in football. Not so much in basketball. The junior guard was on his game Friday night, though, scoring 10 of his 15 points in the first half to help Clovis High's boys wrap up a perfect run through the District 4-5A schedule with a 68-59 win over Hobbs at Rock Staubus Gym. The game didn't matter in the district race, since the Wildcats (19-6, 4-0 district) had already wrapped up the top seed in next week's District 4-5A t...

CMI correspondent photo: Joshua Lucero ENMU junior Dennis Hardwell goes under the basket to make a shot over Texas A&M Kingsville's Adam Mughmaw during the first half of the Greyhounds Thursday night game against the Texas A&M Kingsville Javelinas at Greyhound Arena. Leading by eight points at halftime, the Greyhounds missed their first eight shots and turned the ball over fou...

  • Zias peaking late

    Dave Wagner CMI sports writer

Suddenly a player in the battle for a Lone Star Conference tournament berth, Eastern New Mexico University's women looked like they might lay an egg Wednesday night. The Zias shot 29 percent in the first half against Texas A&M-Kingsville, but still managed to do enough defensively to stay close. Then everything suddenly clicked. • Lady Rams wrap up district with OT win

    Dave Wagner CMI sports writer

For four quarters Tuesday night, Portales High's Francis Armijo couldn't find the basket from the free throw line. She couldn't miss in overtime. Armijo missed all four of her attempts in regulation, but went 4-for-4 in the extra session as the Lady Rams turned back Lovington 38-33 to lock up the District 4-3A regular-season title at the Ram Athletic Center. Both teams struggled from the line through regulation, but PHS (18-6, 3-0 district) went 8-of-10 in the overtime while the Lady Wildcats (17-8, 2-2) were 1-of-3. "When... Full story

  • Rams top Lovington, stay in district race

    Dave Wagner CMI sports writer

If he could, Portales High boys coach Rickie McBroom would take Tuesday's District 4-3A performance against Lovington and bottle it. The Rams used effective half-court traps to help force Lovington into 12 turnovers in a decisive third quarter that led to an 83-68 win at the Ram Athletic Center, preventing Lovington from clinching the regular-season district title. If Portales (14-10, 2-1 district) beats Ruidoso at home on Friday night, the Rams and Lovington (9-17, 3-1) will have a playoff for the top seed in next week's...

    Dave Wagner CMI sports writer

Jenna Sievers has played high school soccer in Clovis and Portales, and she'll stay in the area to continue her career in college. Sievers, a forward, was one of six players signed this week to national letters of intent for next year by Eastern New Mexico University women's soccer coach Todd Padgett. The others are defender Breann Atencio of Albuquerque High; defender/midfielder Chelsey Chandler of Frisco, Texas; forward/defender Grace Tolson of Dallas; midfielder Sydney...

  • Hounds sweep Adams State in season-opening doubleheader

    Dave Wagner CMI sports writer

For Eastern New Mexico University, it was a promising start to the baseball season. For Adams State College, well, the Grizzlies almost pulled one out in their first competition in more than 35 years. Adams State shortstop Jaron Dorchinez hit a game-tying, two-out grand slam in the seventh inning of Saturday's seven-inning opener, pulling the Grizzlies even with ENMU. But junior third baseman Rafael Romo delivered a one-out RBI single in the bottom half to give the Greyhounds...

  • PHS teams set for district play

    Dave Wagner CMI sports writer

Portales High's basketball teams will play the first two of their four District 4-3A games on the road. Truth be told, neither boys coach Rickie McBroom nor girls coach Clay Stout minds that much. PHS squads visit Ruidoso for 5:30 and 7 p.m. clashes tonight. On Tuesday, the Rams (12-8) and Lady Rams (15-6) play at Lovington before hosting both later on this month. Ruidoso dropped district openers last Friday at Lovington, the boys losing 59-49 and the girls dropping a 75-43 decision. "I'll be honest — I think we've played pre...

  • Rams beat Texico on final shot again

    Dave Wagner CMI sports writer

If nothing else, the Texico Wolverines are getting used to last-second finishes. Playing their third one-point game in five nights, this time the ball bounced against the Wolverines, who won a pair of District 4-2A one-pointers over the weekend. Portales senior Emilio Baca grabbed a loose ball in the lane at the end of a mad scramble and put in about a 10-foot shot with roughly four seconds left and the Rams escaped with a 55-54 win over the Wolverines, the third consecutive...

  • ENMU baseball team gears for opener

    Dave Wagner CMI sports writer

With a year under their collective belts, second-year Eastern New Mexico University baseball coach Chris Terry believes he and his returning players have a better feel for things in the Lone Star Conference. The Greyhounds struggled under Terry last season, notably in LSC play where they went just 4-23. • Clovis topples Lady Rams

    Dave Wagner CMi sports writer

Portales girls coach Clay Stout knew he was taking a calculated risk, playing a box-and-one defense against Clovis High sophomore Danni Williams. The Lady Rams made it tough on Williams and, for a long time, the Lady Wildcats. But a 3-pointer by senior guard Miranda Loera opened a seven-point margin at the half, and Clovis pulled away to a 58-41 victory on Tuesday night at the Ram Athletic Center. Portales (11-6), ranked fifth in Class 3A, held Williams to 14 points, about six under her average, but guards Brandi Gomez and Ni...
