PORTALES — Bringing one of the world's most famous paintings to life is no small task, nor is portraying Jesus and his 12 apostles. But Portales' First United Methodist Church has done both for years. FUMC will present "The Living Last Supper" at 7:30 p.m. on Maundy Thursday (the Thursday before Good Friday) in the church sanctuary. There is no charge to attend. The full title is "The Living Dramatization of Leonardo da Vinci's The Last Supper." Based on pastor Ernest K. E...

CLOVIS — Great storytelling, illustrations and humor aren't just qualities that make up a good book. They're things people associate with John Scott Brandon. Although Brandon died in October at age 42, he still leaves his mark in his hometown of Clovis. His mother, Judy Brandon, decided to honor her son by giving back to the community with something she knew John Scott would love: books. Little Free Library is a nonprofit organization that fosters more than 50,000 n...

  • Churches reaching out to youth

    Brooke Finch|Updated Mar 24, 2017

PORTALES - When local youth leaders acknowledged there were barriers between their congregations, they knew something had to be done to fix it. After some discussions and brainstorming, they came up with the way - literally. "The Way," is a worship event intended to break those barriers and more. The inaugural citywide event, created and sponsored by the Roosevelt County Ministerial Alliance, is directed toward junior high and high school students - churchgoers or not. "The Mi...

  • Locals split on LGBTQ content in 'Beauty and the Beast'

    Brooke Finch|Updated Mar 16, 2017

CLOVIS — With a new spin on Disney’s tale as old as time, the recent “Beauty and the Beast” movie stirred up some controversy before even hitting theaters. The live-action remake of the 1991 Disney film opens nationwide today, including at the Allen theaters in Clovis. Beyond the central human-beast romance, however, there’s an entirely different relationship raising eyebrows. Director Bill Condon revealed to “Attitude” magazine in early March that Josh Gad’s character LeFou will have an “exclusively gay moment.” LeFou is...

  • Churches sending daylight saving reminders

    Brooke Finch|Updated Mar 10, 2017

For local churchgoers, Father Time is hopefully no match for the Father above. Clocks will spring forward this weekend at 2 a.m. Sunday morning, marking this year's Daylight Saving Time — and an hour lost. To ensure congregants don't accidentally show up late to their Sunday morning services, some churches are sending out friendly reminders. Senior Pastor Don Thomas of Portales' Central Christian Church said the convenience of technology — such as cell phones automatically upd...

    Brooke Finch|Updated Nov 25, 2016

CLOVIS — The global phenomenon has reached celebrities, politicians, sports teams and more. From Hillary Clinton to 4-year-olds, and even prison inmates and house pets, participants are countless. It’s the “Mannequin Challenge,” and Clovis Community College has joined the bandwagon. A video of the college’s attempt was posted last Friday to the school’s YouTube channel and Facebook page. Unlike the “Ice Bucket Challenge” that raised awareness for ALS two years ago, there’s no rhyme or reason for the Mannequin Challen...

  • Business feature: Local businesses gearing up for Black Friday

    Brooke Finch|Updated Nov 22, 2016

For many area businesses, Black Friday doesn't begin on Friday anymore. Most retail and department stores in Clovis and Portales are gearing up for another year of Black Friday shoppers, and many hope to attract business as soon as Thursday — even among the Thanksgiving feasts. Stacie Sharpe, manager of Big Lots on East 21st Street in Clovis, spent part of the weekend preparing the store for Black Friday sales - stocking merchandise and finalizing employees' schedules. With t...

Imagination Library runs entirely on donations and grants. The program...

  • High School dress code comes under fire

    Brooke Finch|Updated Nov 21, 2016

CLOVIS — When a Clovis High School student arrived at school early for band practice last week, she didn’t expect to be sent home for what she was wearing. She also didn’t expect the response she got from the community. CHS senior Morgan Jeffcoat said she was practicing scales Nov. 9 when a school administrator approached her and allegedly told her to go home and change her outfit because it violated school dress code. Jeffcoat said when she was confronted about her clothes — a sweater over a pair of black leggings — she w...

Impoverished children around the world will have something special to open on Christmas morning, maybe for the first time, thanks to the effort of a Clovis church. For 10 years, Parkland Baptist Church has partnered with Operation Christmas Child, an outreach program offered through the Samaritan’s Purse international relief organization. OCC nationally collects age- and gender-specific shoeboxes filled with gifts and hygiene items. The organization then ships the boxes overseas just in time for the holidays and into the h...
