Curry County gearing up for summer internship program

For the fourth year, Curry County will administer the summer internship program for high school students, ages 16-18.

“The goal of this program is to provide career exploration in a field that the intern may have an interest in,” said Darian Roybal, the county’s human resource director.

Among 33 counties in New Mexico, Roybal said Curry County is one of 14 that take on the grant that makes it possible.

“This began as the New Mexico Public Education Department College and Career Readiness Bureau Summer Enrichment Program in 2021,” Roybal said.

Funds were set aside after Covid to provide relief, and the state has continued to provide funding for the program to continue.

Roybal said Curry County has a budget of nearly $355,500 for this summer’s program.

What can interns expect?

• Interns will work up to 19.75 hours a week during the eight-week program.

• They are also required to attend employability training once a week.

“We had multiple interns in 2023 who were offered positions following the internship program and are still employed today,” Roybal said.

One success story comes from Lance Pyle, the Curry County manager.

Pyle, who started as a high school intern over 25 years years ago, is still with the county.

“That internship changed my career plans and goals my senior year,” Pyle said.

County Commission Chair Robert Thornton said the internships allow youth to “see what they might be interested in” as a career following high school.

“It’s a good opportunity for young people to see how businesses work and gives them a way to get into the work force,” he said.

Those interested must complete an application where they are asked about their career interests, from real estate to healthcare, finance, government, media, and more.

The deadline for submitting an application is May 17.

Internships are scheduled to begin June 3 and last through July 26.
