Rams roll over Ruidoso, take 20-0 victories

RUIDOSO — Portales' 40-run explosion made for an easy day in Tuesday's District 4-4A softball doubleheader win at Ruidoso. The Rams won both games by a score of 20-0, as they collected 35 hits to extend their winning streak to 12 games.

Portales (15-9, 10-0) scored four runs in the first and third innings of Game 1, and then added eight more in the fifth inning to take the 20-0 win.

Seven Rams collected a hit, with five collecting multiple hits. Nicole Laurenz went 3-for-5 with 4 RBIs, while Micaela Garcia went 2-for-4 with a homer and 2 RBIs.

Perhaps the biggest story for Portales softball was the return of pitcher Wendy Baeza, who relieved starter Adrianna Garcia in both games. The duo allowed just two hits and struck out eight in Game 1.

As for Game 2, Portales finished off Ruidoso (2-19, 0-10) in three innings, scoring seven runs in the first inning and 13 more in the third.

Garcia and Baeza combined for a no-hitter, allowing just two walks. At the plate, the Rams had 13 hits and an impressive 12 walks.

Kim Hay led the way going 2-for-2 with 4 RBIs and 3 runs, while Abi Cameron added 4 runs and Micaela Garcia added four RBIs of her own.

Portales will now try to defend its district title on Friday afternoon when it travels to Hope Christian. The Huskies sit just two games back in the standings, meaning that if the Rams win either game, they win the district outright.
