1983: In honor of Arbor Day, the students at Highland Elementary School in Clovis had raised money to pay for two trees to be planted at their school.

Principal Grace Jones helped put the last shovels-full of dirt around the base of a cluster of white birches being planted in front of the school. Custodian Dan Raneri was nearby to assist.

Sue Potter, vice president of the Highland Parent-Teacher Association, said the other tree would be planted in a few weeks.

1968: Civic leaders from Portales and Clovis were given front-row seats at what was billed as an Army-Air Force firepower demonstration in Fort Sill, Oklahoma.

Portales Mayor James Kiker and R. Lyle Hagan, chairman of the Portales military affairs committee, joined Clovis Mayor Chick Taylor and D.L. Ingram, chairman of the Committee of Fifty, for a military flight from Cannon Air Force Base to Fort Sill.

The demonstration included a staged airlift of troops into a simulated combat zone, as well as a rehearsed air battle between jets. A loud display of field artillery was also presented to demonstrate "the firepower used to support our troops in Viet Nam," the Clovis News-Journal reported.
