1973: Oscar P. Cantwell of Clovis was the new lieutenant governor for the Southwest Kiwanis District 13.

A longtime member of the El Desayuno Kiwanis Club of Clovis, Cantwell hadn't missed a meeting in a decade.

In keeping with Kiwanis tradition, a banner marking El Desayuno as the "home club" of the sitting lieutenant governor was presented to the local organization.

Several longtime Kiwanians posed for a Clovis News-Journal photo with the banner, including Cantwell, Bob Riethel, El Desayuno; Jim Cowman, president of Noonday Kiwanis; Raymond Hadley, Texico member; Allen Isbell, El Desayuno member; and Paulie Jones, Portales member.

1973: Wind, blowing dust, rain, and a thunderstorm at times interrupted the 19th Roswell Invitational Track Meet. But the weather didn't stop the Clovis High School mile relay team from a blazing performance that broke a Clovis school record and tied the 12-year-old record for the Roswell meet.

The team — made up of Mike Wheeler, Chris Knighton, Lane Walker, and Craig Berry — completed the event in 3:19.8.

"This is the first time I've ever coached a track team to break 3:20 for the mile relay," CHS coach Terry Swann said.
